Adventures in Copyright: Moving on From Stars

Jul 10, 2008 @ 3:03pm

topshop does ysl.jpgPeople seemed uneasy about Stefano Pilati's use of heather gray jersey on YSL's spring '08 runway - until Kate Moss wore this dress in the ads and everyone else wanted to wear it, too.

The thing that keeps it from being a glorified American Apparel-esque sweatshirt tube dress is the expert tailoring, the thin fabric and the sharply cut front 'V'.

Unfortunately, when Topshop decided to copy it, they left out those important factors. The color's the same, so are the darts and the length, but you can tell, just from seeing it float in internet space, that it won't be flattering on anyone.

Not even Kate - and that says a lot.

p.s. Olga's shoes are way on sale at Barneys!

Topshop is a basic tube dress, what do you it won't be flattering on anyone? With some accessories, maybe even a belt, it can be very flattering if not very flexible piece of clothing! If you need the designer to do everything for you then that's too bad for you.. the lack of imagination.. and oddly, style.

check out this one... you'd think intermix would be above knocking off ysl, but no:

sooo when YSL puts "YSL" blatantly on a shoe, that's ok; but if tory burch and kate spade do it, it's tasteless?

guest at 3:39, I think it has been proven time and time again that no one is above knocking off other designers.

From Martin Margiela's blatantly copied print down to forever 21 and gojane, everyone copies everyone else.

I really want a good tailored/constructed dress made of jersey. It's perfect for me, excellent fit with a comfy feel!

c'mon.

it's a freaking grey tube dress.

really now.
i'm pretty sure there was some kind of grey tube dress made at some point in the last century before the YSL one, let's pull that one out and blame Pilati for being unoriginal.

if you really think this is a copy, you need to get over your pretentious brand loving self.

I've got a fab H & M grey fleece tailored dress from LAST a/w but I've only worn it twice. Ahead of its time methinks...

i may get boo'd for saying this, but i think the topshop version is better. like guest 3:10 was saying, it is very basic and versatile, many different accesories can change it up and take it from one kind of style to another. i would buy it.

i am a happy owner of the topshop tube dress. it has a great cut, nice comfy material, not expensive and looks great on me. it is basic and versatile as guest 3:10, 6:34 say. i can dress it up and down. and i assure you, kate moss would look brilliant in it, too.
