Fashion Is Fun

Before They Were Stars

sessilee lopez in project runway.jpgFact: Sessilee Lopez is from Philadelphia.

Fact: She’s really pretty.

Fact: Before she was on one of the four covers of the Vogue Italia of all time, some people were kind of like, who’s Sessilee Lopez?

Fact: We knew she’d been in some ads and catalogues, and walked as a runway semi-regular, but here’s another tidbit that’s just been realized -

Before she was being shot alongside Naomi, Sessilee was on Project Runway, as one of the models.

Here she is modeling Christian Siriano’s final look from Season 4 in Bryant Park this past February.

And now you can all go, “Oooohhhhh.”

She's also in Kanye West's third Flashing Lights video.

She is gorgeous and absolutely stunning in Vogue Italia but I was just wondering if she was black or latina?

I love how this issue will revamp her career, because in reality, she's been around for a few years now. There are loads of other amazing girls that are never given a chance, because the industry chooses to only feature only one kind of beauty. Keep in mind Liya, Naomi, Chanel Iman, Jourdan, and Arlenis are not the only beautiful ethnic girls out there available for work, and I'm so glad to see Sessilee's beauty and hard work finally being recognized. Hopefully Hollis, Kinee, and other unknowns are next to be highlighted!

She is so beautiful! and because of her last name "Lopez", I would say she's latina!

@ guest 1:30, I've read this: Sessilee is African-American with Dominican and Portuguese heritage. Viva la Raza!

She is stunning!

It always confuses me that people can't understand how someone can be black and Hispanic... her race: black. Her culture: Hispanic. Two different things, people. I'm a white Hispanic and have numerous friends who are Asian and Hispanic... Hispanic is NOT a race.

ok sorry for the tirade. back to the topic at hand: she's stunning.

Post 2:37pm- I would disagree and say that Hispanic IS a race. Although often made up of various heritages, Hispanics or Latinos can be classified as a general racial group since many are of BOTH native american and spanish heritage, some even of African descent. Their culture thus becomes a race over time. Whatever her heritage or race she is gorgeous.

hmmm... i don't know. the recent ads she's lovely but i've worked with her has her dresser a season ago, and she was far from pleasant. sort of divaish, she had really bad skin on her legs and arms and she walked away with the wolford tights although i told her i had to collect them after the show- (in the end the dresser gets blamed). she was kind of mean, and not at all nice. i've worked with so many models during fashion week as a dresser (irina, chanel, freja, du juan, tanya d, agyness etc) and she stands out in my mind as one of the worst people i have had to work with. i'm a fashion student, and being a dresser during fashion week is not a paid gig for me so being treated horribly is not appreciated. hopefully, sessilee has changed?

aww that's unfortunate @ 5:14 and a little bit surprising considering the fact she didn't get much work until now, you'd think she'd try to be as easy to work with as possible. but i still love her edit in VI...she's really good at what she does.

hispanic simply means that your race is of a spanish speaking country.

so my culture is american, yet my race would be hispanic because my ancestors came from a spanish speaking country.

just saying...

i guess we'll just have to take the issue of the definition of hispanic up with the census takers of latin america for an answer lol

I worked with Sessilee as a dresser too (also a fashion student) and she was one of the nicest models I ever met. Perhaps she has changed as she seems to have matured in the industry as well.

perhaps people need to stop obsessing about race. does it really matter, Sessilee is lovely, period. i am of portugese heritage, black portugese, just like there are black latinas. remember that as the legacy of colonialism, people of colour have all kinds of last names, not always indicative of their ethnic or racial background. there is only one true race, the human race!
