But, J'adore Dior

Jul 03, 2008 @ 9:58am

mabelline the colossal volum express mascara.jpgI justify the $24 price tag of Dior Show Black Out mascara because it's the only beauty product I buy regularly.

I don't even remember to put moisturizer on every morning which means I probably buy it once a year (I know, I know). But I can't remember the last time I left the house, or even my room, without coats of Dior on my lashes. It is, unfortunately, an obsession.

So when Natalie told me that Maybelline's newest mascara, The Colossal, allegedly rivaled my favorite Dior, while costing less than $8, I just laughed. I've tried dozens of mascaras and nothing comes close to giving me the volume, length and mini-clumps, (no, I don't like perfect separation) like Dior.

But I just tried the Maybelline - and it pains me to say this after six years of paying $24 every few months - but it works. It works like Dior.

I don't know how many coats I used, because I usually just move the wand around until my eyelashes look sufficiently fake, but I didn't swipe on anymore than I normally do.

The main difference is that The Colossal's waterproof - and Dior Show Blackout isn't. (Regular Dior Show comes in waterproof, but the Blackout version does not). Waterproof mascara scares me, but most people like it better which might make it an advantage.

I'm addicted to Dior's mascara, but if my current tube runs out before I get a new one, my lashes will be reassured by the neon yellow tube tucked into my vanity.

WOW, i saw this at Duane Reade adn thought to myself "Self..this isn't as good as my Dior or Bad Gal" but reading this i may give it a whirl..afterall its only $8
I'm not into waterproof either, i'm sure they will make a regualr formula at some point...

Ok... with a recommendation from not one, but two of my favorites, my wallet size, and a dried up tube of Blackout... I *may* just have to go try this.

:::fingers crossed for a miracle:::

I used to think the same way, that cheap drugstore brands gotta be lacking in some way for it to cost so much less, but i have to say Maybelline DOES make really great mascara, even their normal, Pink-and-green tube is as good as Lancome's $20+ mascara that my mom uses.

Could it be? Something to tempt me away from Max Factor 2000 Calories, one of the only beauty supplies that I'm completely and totally brand loyal to? Oh, my.

Sigh, it pains me to read this! But maybe that's just because I've been using YSL Effet Faux Cils for about 5 years now (and I've tried nearly EVERYTHING, including Dior Show which I actually don't like, and Bad Gal, and a Shu Umera...the list goes on) and nothing has come even close to the YSL which costs a whopping $28. I actaully even have super long lashes that, with the YSL on, almost always get the "are those real?" question, but I might have to try this...

This is so funny last night I got back from purchasing a new tube of Dior at Sephora and my friend called. As I ran down my list of purchases she told me about this mascara that should I be low on funds I should try. And today you give a raving review about it. Now I must see what the fuss is about :)

I actually despise Diorshow! It makes me look like I have no eyelashes; it's sooo natural. I bought this mascara when it came out a few weeks ago (because I'm a mascara junkie). I hate it...too natural for me. But it really does give you the same effect that Diorshow does. So if you're going for the natural look this is perfect. You should also try Too Faced Lash Injection..it gives you the same volume but it's a little darker so the lashes stand out more.

I tried ALL the drugstore brands and found them lame, clumpy, and flaky, but I SWEAR by FIBERWIG. It makes my average lashes look great, is hypoallergenic on my sensitive eyes and skin, lasts a very long time in the tube before getting clumpy and washes off with water.

I hate all the dior mascaras I've ever tried. I don't understand the hype. A great drugstore brand that's never hyped about is Rimmels Lycra mascara that they used to give out during fashion week. That stuff is amazing, it convinced me to stop spending insane amounts of money on YSL. But then I caved and got Eyefly from Givenchy. Which I won't get again because I still think the lyrca mascara is better.

Im addicted to Dior's Black Out!!! I like maybelline mascaras too for the low price and volume but I don't like the fact that it's waterproof... I'm too lazy to use makeup remover every day and I prefer a mascara that comes off with a bit of soap and water.

Guest @ 1:22: If you think Diorshow gives you a natural look, I can only imagine that you didn't use enough or that your every day look is kinda drag-queeny. Either way, what do you use instead?

Also, I hated Black Out, and returned it for my regular black non-waterproof Diorshow...but I may give this stuff a shot next time I run out.

I also dont like Dior Show. Having worked for Sephora for the past year, I know what works and what doesn't for me. I like big huge lashes, and the only thing that works AMAZINGLY for me is the Tarte (lights, Camera, Action) one. Its a four in one..lengthens, vurls, volumizes and conditions. Its expensive.. but soo worth every penny.

No mascara has ever came close to what L'Oreal Voluminous in a curved brush has done for me for years. I've tried so many brands over the years--including DiorShow--but I always go back to my trusty voluminous. Nothing has yet to compare! (I also enjoy the extreme curl and full volume with slight clumpiness as opposed to complete seperation of the lashes)

And apparently waterproof mascara doesn't do the job as well as regular mascara, doesn't give as much volume, etc.

Clinique High Impact is the only one I love. Doesn't smudge when it's humid, comes off with soap and water. Plus it's $14 or so and I can deal with that.

Mascara is the only make up I wear, and I have tried zillions of drugstore and label brands over the years. I have thin but abundant lashes. I switched from Loreal Voluminuous (was getting too clumpy too often) to Maybelline Full N' Soft several years ago, and it's the best of the bunch, for sure.

Also, I think waterproof should only be worn on occasion. You MUST remove it with a make up remover and not plain soap/water. A few years ago, I was wearing Full N' Soft Waterproof and noticing that my eyelashes were falling out over time. I switched to regular and use a remover now.

guest @ 2:53PM: the reason your lashes were falling out is definately because of the waterproof mascara. that stuff isn't suppose to be used every day and it's very drying. if anyone absolutely needs waterproof every day, try using a lash primer or maybe splurge to tint your lashes, but waterproof eveyday will ruin them.

i actually think covergirl lashblast works pretty good for thick lashes, cause my lashes are pretty blah without mascara. however my lashes DO NOT look like drew barrymore's in the commercial:-(

very very interesting, may have to try. while we are in the subject, does anyone have any thoughts on just normal dior show vs. blackout? i went to the counter with questions about the differences and the sales girl could not comprehend or give me a good answers...then she tried to tell me i needed both. i think i like normal dior show better, but want it to be black out as well. why can't they make that?!?

I just bought some at KMart for $6.95.
I am very anxious to try this, considering how I've heard nothing but good reviews about the Diorshow Blackout, but didn't want to spend $24.
I looked at this one, and it comes in two different colours, with Classic Black and something really dramatic, but the one I bought doesn't appear to be waterproof...
