DIY: Prada Resort Earrings

chloe prada DIY.jpgIf it starts with P and ends with rada, it’s probably golden - or in this case, made of Swarovski crystals.

The second we saw Miuccia Prada’s Resort 09 collection, we fell in love and began brainstorming how to get our hands on a pair of the earrings swinging from Kamila’s lobes.

Once we realized next month’s rent wasn’t optional, we gave up on buying the real thing. So we set out to make our own and possibly employ the BeDazzler that’s been sitting in the back of our closet since the fifth grade.

Here’s how it went…

—CHLOÉ ARTHURS

What You’ll Need:

-Black leather: Two 3”x 5” pieces (the best part is you can send for FREE samples from a wholesale distributor)
-Scissors
-Pliers
-Fabric glue that will work on leather
-Toothpicks
-Sequins, nailheads, crystals, rhinestones, etc. (Head to M&J Trimming on 6th between 37th and 38th)
-Two earring posts preferably with flat circular heads and little holes (we found ours in Toho Shoji right next door to M&J)
-Two jump rings (that’s jewelry-speak for an open metal circle), also found in Toho Shoji.
-Patience and a steady hand

Step One: Using the scissors, cut the leather into two oblong shapes.

Step Two: Apply a small amount of glue and start adhering the sequins. Use a toothpick to gently press the sequins into place and to rub away excess glue.

Step Three: We alternated metal and plastic sequins, rhinestones and crystals (size 12 and 16) in different patterns.

Step Four: Affix the small piece of leather to the circular earring post with fabric glue. Then attach the jump ring, but don’t close it just yet. Pierce a hole in the top of the oblong earring using scissors or a safety pin and attach it to the post using the jump ring. And Pra-DA!!
