Going Bananas for Vintage

Friday, Jul 11, 2008 / 11:22 AM

banana republic lace.jpgWe stopped by Banana Republic’s showroom yesterday to preview their holiday collection – and, well, holy Mad Men.
If the costume designers for our favorite show get lost on the way to Kate Spade, it’s because they’re caught picking up some watered down Michael Kors at Banana.
Their winter palette is purple, black, gold and a pinkish nude. The shapes are definitively vintage: bell cut skirts, boat neck shift tops and dresses, high waisted pencil skirts and cropped 3/4 sleeve jackets. There are a few Prada-esque lace shifts and skirts mixed into the heavy silks and tweed jackets, all paired with patent booties and chunky gold peep-toes. A selection of Inhabit-like sweater coats and boyfriend slacks hung on the casual end.
Even their jewelry looked like it was sourced from antique jewels, especially when nestled next to the fur muffs, (marked “LUXURY”), and elbow length gloves.
We loved almost every single piece. Just wish it came out before fashion week so we could prance around Bryant Park like it’s 1962.

oh yum

Looks great – the larger bag reminds me of one from Sang A and the shoes look like Louboutin’s City Girl Sandals. BTW – thanks for posting Italian Vogue :)

I’m like the look and can’t wait for Mad Men to return at the end of the month!

I’m drooling
That short sleeved cardigan is to die for and the first dress before the cut is what the Prada collection should have looked like.
Lovely

I can’t wait for fall!

the coat (or is that an extra long sweater?) and the sandy beige sweater with the large white buttons are stunning!

The middle dress in the last pic looks like RM.

that first dress is just divine, ohtoberich!

Y’all seem to give Banana Republic a lot of loving… hmm. The stuff looks okay, but will probably be overpriced for the quality.

How much does this stuff go for??!

couldn’t they have at least steamed the pink dress?

wow…i love it all….BR is so hit or miss, but it seems like for fall i will definitely be dropping some cash in there

That black lace dress is VERY Prada…

Wow somtimes BR really gets it right – I love all of this!

so in love

wow, my look is finally in style! i’ll have to pick up as many pieces as i can before the tide turns and girls in men’s suits and drop-waists start calling me a 1950′s trophy wife again.

Ha! I’m with guest 11:18. And indeed the tide will turn, but can we say “clearance”?
Great images. Will link back.

oh my that my….. that black dress is haven ….. plus i love love love mad men

the last pic of the white plunging neckline tuxedo looks very simliar to the YSL one a couple of seasons back worn by Gisele in the ads, non (sans the black piping)?

i’m glad BR is finnaly doing it right. when they’re bad they’re horrid, (see the last 3 years, but when they’re good they fabulous!)

very, very nice–doesn’t the black dress in the last picture look Roland Mouret-insipired?

my heart just skipped a beat over that purple car coat. i can not WAIT until that collection is out in stores. i don’t usually like BR but that coat it to. die. for.

ooh i am so in love with that pink bag! and i love the sweater with the white buttons.. the metallic dress is amazing.

I have to agree with another reader.. I think the garments are fab but they will definitely be moving up in the price points?? Also, is this for American stores or the new London flagship??
