Would You Wear

Humpty Dumpty, a Meditation

valentino says happy easter.jpgDrama has never been a problem for us. From bubble skirts to puffy tops, we don’t shy away from volume, however the ‘egg shape’ that made big appearances in this season’s runways has us a little stumped.

Valentino’s Fall couture show opened with a skirt and jacket ensemble that showed an extreme version of this trend while Balenciaga, Antonio Marras, and Giambattista Valli featured more wearable adaptations. So let’s weigh the pros and cons:

For one, it’s a look that’s sure to set you apart from every LBD and a-line frock at the party. In addition, you never have to worry about being squished in a crowded room, people will surely give you some extra space, especially in Valentino’s extra wide number.

The down sides: you might look like an egg, since you’re basically distorting your figure and leaving it all up to the imagination. Secondly, unlike most pieces with a wide shape, these dresses and skirts are not belted at the waist, leaving even the narrowest model looking, well… round.

So it’s basically the age-old question, do I wear this really interesting new look even though I’ll look hideous? Which loosely translates into, Do I dress for the fashion? Or does the fashion dress me?

So, would you do the Humpty?

I like the subtler Balenciaga version. I think it could actually be quite flattering if it isn't so exaggerated.

but how do you sit in it?

It looks good on the runway and it SHOULD stay on the runway. You have to adapt new fashion pieces to your wardrobe according to your style.

I would wear it, but with a belt. I would also have to compromise with comfy shoes, since I doubt sitting down would be an option.

I think it's an interesting look! Sure, maybe guys wouldn't like it, but who dresses for them anyway? If we did, we'd all be running around in negligees every day! Even though the egg shape obscures the figure a teensy bit, it's still graceful and in my mind more appealing than the "bubble" look of recent years. And with skinny legs poking out underneath it's not like people won't know what your body looks like underneath.

I love it! I have a Marni black and white egg shaped dress with a racer back and my daughter says it looks like a panda mated with a hot air balloon! I just feel so chic whenever I wear it. And it hides my little tummy. What's better than to look chic and not have to hold in your stomach or wear spanx?

just try to imagine what sitting in that will look like, and getting up afterwards--not pretty. balenciaga was better--this girl is ok, just ok!

If you dont like it, its not you. If its not you, you arent going to feel confident. And thats what style is all about.

the looks may not be belted, but they are nipped in at the waist, so you'd still have a figure...

i think that if it's something you want to wear and can pull off, go ahead. i wouldn't wear it, but mostly b/c i'm a little chunky and it's definately not kosher with my usual style. i would look so out of place wearing it. but i am loving the fact that fashion is taking on new silhouettes recently instead of all this 'belted at the waist, flare around the hips' or skinny jeans stuff that has been around forever.

my thoughts have always been that fashion is only stylish when it makes you look good.
