Fashion week is descending upon us and the rumor mill is in overdrive but this just landed in our inbox and something rings true:
After only three collections, Peter Som has submitted his resignation at Bill Blass. Perhaps he can’t handle the stress of designing more than one collection? Let’s face it, he’s no Marc or Karl.
Word is management at Nexcen is keen on keeping him on board, at least in name, until they can sell the brand.
The tip comes a little over a month after The New York Times wrote this story about Nexcen’s financial troubles in which they pointedly question the security of the brand’s future.
Design wise Som seemed to be doing fine. Maybe it’s the lack of profits and business side he just can’t, or doesn’t want, to handle.
UPDATE: Another tipster writes in, “Som was unhappy with the control Blass’ management tried to execute over his creative aesthetic. He’s been fighting with them since he got there.”

bummer, he was actually designing some cute stuff!…seems like the company’s troubles probably have more to do with the management though…from what i’ve been reading, these guys at nexcen sound pretty shady…and what the heck do they know about fashion? the rest of their brands are mall fast food!…hopefully some non-shady people with actual knowledge of the fashion industry will buy the brand and inject a little life (and cash) into it.
(interesting that both blass and halston, after making big splashy debuts in february, trying to revive faded 70′s brands, are now faltering.)
that “update” sounds a lot like someone from peter’s own brand trying to cover his ass..and maybe a tweaking of the truth….
oh dear…why did you have to resign, peter? you designed the loveliest clothes for bill blass. sadly, seems like business/management always trumps creativity.
yea, blaming the management seems a little old to me. And he is no Marc or Karl in his creative aesthetics…
peter som has to be the best designer that brand has gotten since bill himself. if there’s a “problem” there it’s definately not coming from the design side. the other guest was right- when all your other brands are mall fast food- how do you expect the company to know how to run a fashion house? fast food and fashion only have one thing in common- the fast part. peter is a lovely person and has exceptional talent- better he spend it on his own line than on a brand that doesn’t recognize his genius. oh, and thank god he’s not another marc jacobs!
i read now that conde nast portfolio is reporting that he is not leaving, just renegotiating his contract….but i still believe you guys, to be honest….”renegotiating” sounds like a fancy way of covering up the truth, which you know will come out eventually.
too bad, i really liked his first collection and thought he would eventually satisfy the blass customer.
The truth is the clothes are not selling. Peter is a good contemporary designer but not couture.
Bad fabric choices (color/hand) and
not merchandised well.To date Michael
Volbrach was the best successor to the label.
Old Bill is having a laugh!
Ah, shame, I loved what he did.
wow, this little posting really blew up…livened up the end of the week, for sure…and, according to the ny post, was a big enough deal that anna herself stepped in…you guys must be loving all the attention ;)
The update is 100% true. I was told this by a Blass insider.
um, i interned at blass, and from what i saw, everyone there was falling all over themselves to cater to peter’s every whim…they walked on eggshells around there…everyone wanted to make sure peter was happy
