Streetwalker: It Takes Two

Jul 18, 2008 @ 11:01am

stylist streetwalker small.jpgAriel and Charlotte, both aspiring stylists.

Got Them: Walking down Mott St. and enjoying the sunny day.

Stalked Them: Well, we didn't really have to. We were sitting on our stoop eating ice cream. But we did jump up, camera ready!

Shot Them: Because we couldn't let this adorable duo pass us by. Their innovative style is fresh and eye-catching - both girls rock florals in their own unique way.

They Say: "We're job hunting, NYU grads trying to start a business! The shoes are Helmut Lang and this is my brother's old t-shirt."

We Say: Two stylish girls are better than one!

Sometimes the line between homeless and fashion is crossed, and they're awfully close to that line. The girl on the right is ok, I like the shape of what she's wearing, but the flower pattern is a little too third grade for me. The girl on the left, I think the problem is actually not the pants, but the shirt. However, I give them credit for at least being interesting.

They need the new Marilyn Monroe fashion line. lol I was reading about it on Specialreport.com and it seems that not only living people can create their own fashion line, but now dead stars can too.

I heard about these girls. They're starting a styling business called Malexandra and The Tempest and they have another girl that's involved. Arielle used to intern at W and their third, Denise used to intern at NYLON. Look out for them, big things about to happen.

They look cute, I think.
They actually look like a lot of hipster stylists their age, so people who are shocked that they are dressed like this are obviously 14-year-old Ohioans.

However, the slouch and mouth agape? Not flattering.

Yes, they do look like a lot of hipster stylists, and its not shocking. It's just not different or interesting, so I think noting that perhaps the fit could be better on the pants and that this nineties floral trend is dull and ugly, is perfectly justified.

don't think it's nice to say "14-year old ohioans" like people from outside nyc necessary know nothing...obviously some people who are "in the know" like these stylists end up in not so great looks.

personally, i'd rather see stylists with their own style - not what i already see as "on trend". i kind of feel like that's your job, to demonstrate what's next (and hopefully FLATTERING!!)

I have to agree with guest at 1:26...these girls are trying so hard to look like they don't try. Which they obviously do as aspiring stylists. Fair enough. But I'm not convinced that guest at 12:43 isn't actually one of these girls writing in! Am I the only one who thinks the hipster look is a little too trendy at this point? It's not just a few rocking the look, which would make it more palatable. It looks like these girls just walked out of Urban Outfitters with these outfits.

I just can't find a way to justify high-waisted, baggy-crotched belted "pants" (in quotations because the construction, or lack thereof, of the waistline leaves me questioning) when combined with a shredded Harley Davidson tee that shrieks "Teen Vogue DYI Page." I don't care how many trend quotas that left outfit fills, it's heinous in my book.

RE: "people who are shocked that they are dressed like this are obviously 14-year-old Ohioans."

I feel like in an effort to be "fashionable" people often forget to wear what is flattering for their bodies.

While I commend the girl on the left for assembling her outfit in an interesting way, while maintaining a current look, those pants hang in a way that sweatpants do, something that most of us wouldn't smile upon, even if they were floral print. :op

I live in Montreal, and many, many people manage to be simultaneously DROP DEAD GORGEOUS AND stylish. You don't see stuff like this outside of the Plateau, and I think it's because people aren't so desperate to latch on to the latest trends, just because they're trends. They use some discrimination when they dress.

I guess I just don't see the point of being fashionable if what you're wearing doesn't make you look beautiful.

PS RE: not smiling for pictures - some people just feel stupid donning a contrived smile. That may be the case here. They don't look like they're trying too hard, just that they may have been taken off guard.

While I don't particularly love these outfits, they do make me wish Seattle were more like NYC. The style here is so incredibly boring, and people have been wearing the same plain rocker/mod/garage uniform for the 12 years since I've moved here from the east coast.

Seeing these pictures, even if I don't always think the outfits are great, is pretty fun. It makes me miss living in a place where people are individual and creative with styling. While New Yorkers might say they look like every other hipster, they're definitely not like the hipsters in my city or the other west coast cities I've been to.

the commenters on this site leave nothing but rude and bitchy notes on streetwalkers - you guys should make them send in pictures of themselves to see what they think is perfect street style. see how they feel after everyone rips them to shreds. (btw. i live in kansas so i've never been a streetwalker, i'm just tired of reading all the negative comments on here!)

i like both outfits, but i think that the girl on the left would have looked nicer with a lighter coloured top with more shape, the whole outfit comes across as a bit too slouchy in my opinion. I love the rest of it though (the belt is awesome)....jut not with that top.

guest @ 1:39. You may be getting tired of what you see as ALL negative comments... I'm getting a little tired of the backlash to the negative comments. I guess this is backlash to the backlash to the backlash.

If you read through, MOST of the comments were positive or, if they were negative, they were also constructive and balanced (said WHY they didn't like it, what could be improved).

Everyone has such different styles, it'd be impossible to find something that everyone here likes. Especially because what is often presented here is street style and is only liked by a particular demographic.

So, it's ridiculous to expect people not to make negative comments in a medium that DEMANDS an opinion one way or the other, and furthermore elicits off-hand, flippant remarks.

Yes, there were also a number of purely negative comments, but that too is par for the course. These girls are in the fashion world and have and will hear much worse.

People are writing in a very uncensored manner and are basically saying the same things that would pop into their heads if they saw these girls on the street.
*Some* of it isn't meant to be malicious, although it comes across that way because of the medium. But, When you go out wearing what you perceive to be original, it's expected that some people may not like it, so the streetwalkers probably already have a thick skin about it.

And to the other "14 year old ohioan" commenter:
The negativity has pretty much nothing to do with being from outside New York, since most of the people on streetwalker are, I guarantee, not originally from New York City themselves. They moved there to go to school and/or start their career, as many Manhattanites do.

Making mean remarks about "Ohioans" only makes you sound like an insecure 20-something who moved to new york from a small town yourself and thinks arrogance makes you sophisticated. Got a new job, got a makeover, a diet and a coke habit, but still haven't lost that glassy-eyed wonder at "the big city".

Aaaand that concludes my morning rant.

That Ohio comment irked me too. Some of the most creative types come from oustide of the metropolitan area because they are forced to use their imagination. 2 great eccentrics come to mind- Johnny Depp and John Waters!
