Would You Wear A Men's Dress Shirt (As A Dress)?

Jul 11, 2008 @ 1:42pm

tom cruise.jpgOn a SoHo shopping excursion earlier this week, I was running to the subway and looked up only to be greeted by two ass cheeks peeking out from underneath a floating shirttail.

That's right. No tights, no shorts and nothing to hide.

We're all for pulled together shirt dresses that take a menswear standard and elongates it for a fun summer staple for girls. But we're not entirely sold on the idea of wearing an actual men's shirt that's meant to be tucked into a pair of trousers, but barely skims your butt.

The idea of shopping in your boyfriend's closet sounds like an easy way of stealing his blazers and cuffing the sleeves so you can look just like Gwyneth. And throwing on one of his shirts with a cute sandal is the definition of effortless. Sounds great, doesn't it?

Our only problem is that men's dress shirts aren't really meant to be worn as a dress so they're a bit disproportioned. Belts can help with making a shape, but the hemline continues to creep up and collars begin to look messy. Hence, your ass on display.

It always looks good in the movies and around the house, but would you wear it on the street?

Over tights? Yes. By itself? Never ever ever.

I do, if it's long enough. I don't see the issue.

I agree ^, only with tights. But I could probably get away with it anyway because I'm so short!

NEVER!

A former friend of mine once wore a men's dress shirt to a party and eventually wound up passed out on a couch exposing EVERYTHING. One of the the other party people put paper towel over her lower half for modesty's sake. I think that was the turning point for me and men's dress shirts.

how tall was this woman, 7'2?! if i put on my husband's dress shirt it would go past my knees!

they're generally really long so they can be tucked in and not come out, maybe she was just wearing her own shirt and forgot to put on pants this morning.

a men's shirt by itself as a dress totally works -- as long as you're the right height. this look is best left to petite girls.

Men's shirts are longer than women's, but they don't cover even half of my ass.

The outfit you described was worn by a group of women at the Castro Halloween party a couple of years ago; they dubbed themselves the "Walk of Shame Girls." Enough said.

I love men's shirts as dresses. I agree that is works quite well if you are petite. And if you need length, find a huge man's shirt at the thrift store!

Never tried it with an actual men's shirt, but if the fit and length look good, why not? And I would definitely buy and wear a shirtdresses in store! But ass cheeks hanging out? Ugh, that's just trying too hard and gross.

I feel like this women on the Sartorialist did an interpretation of that look without looking like a floozy.

Actually this is one of my favorite Sart looks:

I certainly would...what's the difference between a men's tailored dress shirt and a shirt dress...a few inches maybe! I love the authenticity of the men's shirt...sexy!!

someone already said this but Carrie Bradshaw wore this once, to me she looked fantastic and her bum was covered. I would wear this if everything was covered or with some shorts, I think it looks quite chic

Like the idea but dunno how easy it is in real life. In bed on the other hand? All the time. I have two vintage mens dress shirts and I wear them as nightshirts with the sleeves rolled up. Perfect in summer...

I do this all the time with really large men's shirts I buy from op shops. Because they're a very large size, they're longer. Tux shirts look especially cute!

Just as a note... the Banana Republic men's slimfit oxfords are great for this. They have a slight stretch that makes them very easy to move in. xo
