Would You Wear Black Lipstick?

Jul 16, 2008 @ 4:25pm

giles fall 08 black lipstick.jpgSince the 90's and the Fall runways are what's on our minds most right now, we've been giving a lot of thought to black lipstick.

We saw it at YSL and Giles, and we kind of secretly see it on ourselves, but only with the right invitation, and only if we could pull it off without venturing into Morticia Addams' territory.

We figure we could always switch it out for a super deep red or aubergine to go with super soft eyes, but then it might just look like dark lipstick, which isn't nearly as exciting as a total mouth blackout.

But more importantly - would you wear black lipstick (on a night other than Halloween)? Or is this too reminiscent of that other 90's blunder, Goth?

(And if you already have, then please tell us how you worked it - we seriously want to know!)

YES!!! It looks fabulous. I did dark wash straight leg hudson jeans with the perfect sheer, but not to sheer just-sheer-enough-to-not-see-your-bra sheer white calvin klein tank top and some flat leather t-strap sandals with braid detailing I bought in a small outdoor market in Italy. Then I left my hair down (dark blonde/light brown cut in a mid-length messy bob) and as for makeup, concealer, lightly powdered face - including eye lashes, laura mercier eye base in wheat applied on my lips, then brown eye liner blended in, then burts bees chapstick, then black eyeliner blended in then the brightest red lip gloss applied super lightly and just for gloss - no color. It looked so fresh and not to made up. TRY IT!!!!

if i was a girl id try it.. he'll id try it now but my lips are far too full. my lips would appear as a vortex of some sort. Bethan Cole, a british beauty editor got all sorts of hell for her signature onyx lip:

I think it would be great with a bare face (just mascara) and an all black outfit. Maybe some black leather leggings and an oversized black t-shirt...with some great platforms with hardware. Love it.

The Armani Silk No. 62 is technically a super dark brown but when applied looks black. I love it!

I normally wear a deep red in the winter and fall with no other makeup and think it looks nice with my pale skin. I'd totally give black lipstick a try if someone could recommend a good one...

It seems a bit too middle-school-goth-phase for me.

I use Makeup Forever cream in black, and I would recommend it.
The only draw-back to black lips it would seem is never getting them to stay glossy and truly black enough.
When it begins to wear off or look gritty, it falls dangerously out of runway territory and into high school mall goth look.

I hate it. It looked good in the YSL show but those girls had their mouths shut. Once you try to talk everyone can see your gross yellow teeth (cos dark lippy makes your teeth look dirty). Ugh.

I wouldn't wear it because I'm not a makeup person first of all, and then I don't think it would look nice on me. Kudos to those who have the guts and style to pull it off though!

definitely no--black lips are too gothic for me. they're only meant for runway and should stay on the runway.

The only time I ever dared to try black lipstick was to a glam rock dragish show. I was wearing a basic black cocktail dress and the hose with the classic line running down the back. It looked quite awesome, but it was the kind of atmosphere where it was okay had bits of lipstick smearing everywhere.

No, it can't work without just looking goth.

Um, no i think it's edging on full-blown goth, dark red is "seductive" but black is just plain scary

the only time i've worn black lipstick was on halloween, but the perfectly made up heroines of black and white movies always make me think that black lipstick has the potential to be elegant and sophisticated.

Omg!! how could you completely leave out Luella A/W 08? I mean minus the crimped hair they did the black lips so well!!! Especially with those jaw dropping gorgeous shoes.

I used to wear Shu Uemura's black lipstick. It came on sheer and shiny for daytime. I'd pair it with gray smoky eyes; it was downtown glam with a touch of goth.

For nighttime, you could add grey eyeshadow to the gloss for more depth without looking too high-school goth. This styling was straight copied from an Elle magazine shoot of the time, by the by.

I've since lost my lipstick and look for it from time to time.

I'm a boy and I went blackmouth at a cocktailparty at a hotel three weeks ago. I was dressed almost all black, but with alot of vintage jewelery, a polar bear vest and a black headband.

I got alot of attention, both good and bad. but i loved it, and 'll totally do it again.

It have nothing to do if it's in or out, it all depends on your face, body and clothes. If everything is perfect, black lipstick will only make it better.

I've actually been holding on to my charcoal gray lipstick from the 90's which worked really well with my pale skin and reddish hair. It made my eyes look really blue. Not too sure about black, but it could work with a very specific look.

Agreed with Guest at 6:15. It has to remain absolutely, spick-and-span PERFECT or else you look sad and Hot Topic-y. Wear it to something where you won't be eating, drinking, or making out....but that crosses of a lot of shindigs.

And my personal opinion? Nighttime only.
