Adventures in Copyrights: Blood is Thicker than Water

aic bloods.jpgFact: Blood is the New Black makes funny shirts.

Fact: ASOS waits until other people make funny shirts, then pounces.

A New Fact (to us, anyway): ASOS will copy any designer, not just the big ones, including this indie brand - as long as a star wears it.

So when a reader sent in that Blood is the New Black’s Blood Gang shirt was copied, we were a little surprised that ASOS even knew BNB, and that some star wore a shirt by them (anybody know who? Our guess goes to Ashton.) It’s also kind of funny that the copy retails for more than quadruple the price of the original.

But here’s another thought - could the actual Bloods gang claim rights to the design? Might be tough to hold up in court…

WHAT?!?!?! this is not a fashion statement at all.
I totally see preppy kids from Westchester wearing this...

If I saw some celebrity or hipster wearing either of these shirts, I'd cringe.

Wasn't this a shirt on Threadless first?

I think this shirt is absolutely tasteless. Gangs ruin people's lives and if I saw someone sporting this I'd think them to be a total fashion retard. And I'd dare a preppy kid from Westchester to wear this in the inner city.

Maybe some kids in suburbia can wear this - but where I'm from - wearing this outside will land you in the hospital. Totally not worth the price.

Im sure members of the bloods wont be happy with this one. Anyone who isnt a gang member shouldnt wear something with the gang's sign on it

Isn't it also pretty awful that both shirts glorify gang violence?

Yeah, I'm pretty sure that the gang owns the sign and if any of the pasty hipsters that would buy these shirts wore them in South Central LA they would end up bloodier than the hands on the second one.

OMG, ASOS has no idea what it just did. Unfortunately, i happen to know gangs...(apparently-there's an infestation of them in the south, especially here in atlanta) if you even wear a blue bandana you get evil looks...
1st, the bloods are going to be super pissed to see this, and that's never good. these people are ruthless
2. any crip who spots someone wearing that shirt has the right to hurt that person (it's just stupid gang stuff...)
3. fashion's getting weird again....turning dangerous street signs into fashion statements...it's that black leather jacket thing all over again

Wow they're both totally tacky. No one should wear either one of them. I would definitely judge someone who did.

This is creepy.

It's also weird b/c ASOS is a UK online store. Do they even have the Bloods and the Crips in the UK? I know they have gangs, but please. I don't think Londoners will understand the significance!

If I wore this...I would get shot. (I live in LA) I have to worry about what I wear to a Dodgers baseball game! Certain colors and symbols could get someone out here a nice bullet to the brain. I live in a suburb where someone could potentially wear this but I still wouldn't risk it.
