Another Catalogue?

new jcrew catalogue.jpgJ.Crew really wants you to buy their jewelry.

The company's been loving change lately, from their mens-only store to $200 jeans, and now a brand new catalogue devoted entirely to accessories.

They've changed the format and chosen to print on recycled newspaper. And fancy new paper means fancy new contents - Italian leather wallets, freshwater pearls, vintage Rolexes.

Creative Director Jenna Lyons told WWD, "Because we mail catalogues so often, thirteen a year, we felt it was time for something a little more arresting."

We agree - J.Crew could really use some spice, especially with the price tags on their Fall collection. But changing the dimensions of the paper and throwing gold beads over a cashmere t-shirt might not be the most "arresting" approach.

And how about no catalogues at all? Because seriously, thirteen every year? Recycled paper or not, that's like thirteen too many if you have a website.

I don't know who they're kidding. It's much more than 13 a year. If you order something, they mail you the catalog again. And they may not be including the times they send the same catalog with a different cover in that number. JCrew does have great quality stuff, but the prices are ridiculous! I used to wear their rollneck sweaters in middle school- now sweaters cost in the triple digits. I think they're thinking a bit too highly of themselves.

I actually like the JCrew catalog. I think how they style the looks in the catalog is a bit better than the website sometimes.

Good point. While I do enjoy the Jcrew catalog, why do they still feel that it's necessary? Does anyone call up and order over the phone from their catalog? Probably not

The new photos look like coach meets terry richardson, I feel like jcrew is going through a major brand identity crisis right now.

I love my J.Crew catalog-just got my new one-but it really does bother me when the "new" catalog is just last month's with a new cover. 1 or 2 a season would be much more appropriate.

The JCrew ad's are looking a little vintage Kate Spade. I mean, the fit on the clothes? You have to be kidding me I cant fit into an 8 there in pants and its b/c I have hips. The jewelery looks great, but for the price I would rather splurge on some KJL or vintage costume. Much more original.

I once bought a pair of cute vintage-looking earrings from J.Crew, but I think the metal was brass (or who knows what) and it left marks on my ears -- dark lines where the wire had touched my ear.

Personally I buy a lot of jewelry from Banana Republic -- they haven't had anything too great lately, but sometimes they do some cool costume-y looking stuff.

I love jcrew catalogues but 13 is too much - they could easily cut it down to like 8 - 2 per season. And I hate when they switch the cover and keep the maint contents the same - annoying. I actually get a better feel for how the clothes will look in real life in catalogues and have been persuaded to buy something because of the way it looked in a catalogue in a mock life situation as opposed to the store or online.

You would be surprised how many people still order from catalogs these days. I think it's a certain demographic, but they're out there. Older people who don't trust computers and things like that. They also drive business to the website.

J Crew's jewelry has gotten amazing over the last 6 months. I love their clothes, very cute and also very basic so anyone can where then and style them as they see fit. Much better quality than Banana or Gap, I think,

I love j crew and their catalogs, but 13 is definitely too much. They're catalogs are usually among the best though, at least in my opinion, and their clothes are beautiful and excellent quality.

Trust me when I say, the people who shop at J. Crew often think they don't send out catalogs often enough. And people always take them from the stores even when they already receive them.
