Do You Cover Your Covers?

paris hilton vogue.JPGIf, for some reason, I wanted to buy Elle, and Jessica Simpson were on the cover, I wouldn’t buy it.

Because I will not carry her face around, I will not be seen with her on the subway, and I don’t want people to think I actually spent money on a publication that deems her worthy of cover status - not to mention I’d have no interest in reading the five pages devoted to her.

It’s like the visual version of Cosmo, and it’s embarrassing.

Natalie thinks there should be different categories of women’s magazines, one for fashion and one for botox, diets etc. Which would be perfect because while I do want to see the Kate Lanphear-styled editorials, I don’t want to read about what happened when “I Left My Wife For a Younger Woman” or how I can have better sex if I improve my energy.

Do you refrain from buying a magazine if the cover girl makes you cringe? Or do you buy it anyway and slip the New Yorker over it until you’re safe inside your apartment?

Or, I can’t believe I’m asking this, do you actually love Jessica Simpson?

I DO love Jessica Simpson, but that aside, I also avoid buying fashion mags because of their stupid articles about the latest cosmetic procedures, diets, men, etc. The worst was an article extolling the health benefits of only eating every other day! (called alternate day fasting) After that, I realized how insane they were.
I can always check out the best editorials on fashionista ANYway.

I do agree that it's absolutely ridiculous for Jessica Simpson to grace Elle magazine, but I could give two sh*ts about what people think of me carrying it around.

That said, how the hell do you look like that on the inside, and yet have the lamest Cosmo looking covers? Mariah? Jessica Simpson? Look, thats fine if they need those women to make sales I suppose, but my gosh, do something interesting with them then! STYLE them better! I don't buy a fall fashion issue to look at a Dolly Parton wannabe costume on the cover!

i wouldn't buy a magazine with jessica simpson on the cover, not because i care if people see me with the mag (as i usually read them in the bathtub anyway!), but because i don't want to support a magazine who actually finds that vapid woman worthy of gracing their pages.

i canceled my "self" mag subscription after she was on the cover and they wrote a ridiculous self-serving article about how smart and generous she is.

i do NOT love, like, or even refrain from strongly disliking the image that jessica simpson promotes of herself. though i don't know her personally, she displays herself as an ignorant, unintelligent, fake, dishonest, untalented, pretentious, morally superior ditz. definitely the celebrity i detest the most.

Britt--good point not to mention the art direction on that cover is HORRENDOUS. It's like the art department was loathe to have jessica on the cover and tried desperately to loose her in that orange writing..but in doing so basically obscured the entire cover and gives me a headache to look at it.

I don't care who sees me buying Elle, regardless of the cover (and I am a guy) but it is annoying that Hachette put her on. It denigrates an interesting mag with some good editorials, shopping info, and ok features into a glorified Cosmo/Marie Claire--which are NOT fashion titles to the dismay of Hearst.

The most offensive thing about her is her awful fakeness, as someone said, and that she tries to brand herself as an authentic, country kind of gal. Elle can and should have done far better for their fall issue, let alone any other issue. I would even rather see the prettier, less ubiquitous Ashlee. Fashionista,

As a long-time reader I love your posts and collages in general. But as of late, the tone is becoming less about fashion and more about pretentiousness. Isn't fashion all about NOT caring what other people think? Bashing Jessica Simpson (whose covers, by the way, have a good record of selling magazines, which is important if you want these fashion magazines to survive a declining audience) is a pretty cheap shot on a blog with a high-fashion audience. Instead of breathlessly bemoaning F21 knockoffs, which is getting pretty old, pretty fast, why not show some more awesome streetwalkers who manage to make cheap fashion actually fashionable?

But really, I'm interested to know what the response from the Fashionista team is to the increasing number of comments that express dissatisfaction with the tone in some of these posts....what are your guys' thoughts?

Guest #26, i see what you're saying about fashion being about not caring what people think, but that's exactly why we continue to do what we do - because we honestly write what we think, and frankly, we don't care if people disagree. in fact, we welcome it. it makes thinking about fashion that much more interesting, and sometimes, depending on the commenter, kind of funny.

as for the increasing number of negative comments, that has a lot to do with our increasing number of readers. what can we say - mo pageviews, mo problems.

I'm sure part of this is born out of jealousy (I hate hearing men talk about how hot she is, boobs arent the only thing that make a body desirable), but I can easily buy a mag with an equally gorgeous cover girl as long as she has half a mind to back it up. i hate the Alba/Simpson covers. Also, I hear what you're saying about the trashy health articles, but the 'alternate day fasting' is actually supported by some really interesting scientific research that you can read about in plenty of science and medicine mags- it's just that the fashion mags have recently picked up on it and are running with it, and maybe in a less responsible way. But to their credit, it is actually a well-researched way to promote longevity and has been proven in animals to help ward of cancers, so it's not as crazy as it sounds.

i don't buy magazines with gwyneth paltrow or halle berry on the cover. i find them both smug beyond belief and, aside from the embarrassment of toting their faces around, looking at pictures of either one of these self-pronounced "great" actresses who are "too beautiful" to get work irritates the heck out of me.

I think its really shallow, and snobby that someone would not boy a magazine they like just because they do not like who is on the cover. Just buy it and skip the part with the particular person you do not like. And do you really think people are watching to look and what you are reading, seriously you are not that important. And who has time to paste someone else face on it, seriously we are not in junior highschool just growup.

I am the same way with Oprah book club books - if there is a book i want to read branded that way, i hunt it down in a used bookstore for a cover WITHOUT the big O. I can't stand the thought that people would think i was reading that because Oprah told me to.

I received my ELLE in the mail with a cover over the cover saying "LAST ISSUE - PLEASE RENEW" and let me say that after opening that first cover, to my horror I am staring at a terrible photo of Jessica Simpson! I was seriously horrified to see her on the cover, why is ELLE (an esteemed fashion magazine with pretty good content these days) putting Jessica Simpson on their HUGE FALL FASHION issue anyways! This is totally beyond my comprehension. I despise JS and everything she stands for. She has no fashion sense, and who the hell even cares about her life anymore these days??!! I want to see celebs OFF all the magazine covers; I am wistful for the days when fashion magazines actually put MODELS on their covers. So much more interesting!!!

Who cares who is on the cover? And what problem do you people have with Jessica Simpson, is it because she is "main stream" or is it because she is hotter than you? I hate it when women bash other women or look them up and down rudely because they are jealous. I just say "Yep, she's freakin hot" because I am confident in myself. Sure she's a freakin air head, but who cares. I took that whole post and anyone else's who bashed her as your chances to bash Jessica Simpson because of insecurity.

Since when is Elle a truly "fashion" magazine anyway? If Jessica Simpson was on the cover of Vogue, then maybe then I would be worried.

I definitely won't buy if certain people are on the cover -- Jessica Simpson being one of many. Other no-buys include "how to please your partner in bed" and that ilk.

ok so what does everyone think of kiera knightly on the cover of september american vogue?!?!?!

this is like, the 4th or 5th time she's been on the cover in 2 years!! RIDICULOUS! There are only 12 precious covers a year and they waste them on duplications when there are so many deserving women.

Oh my goodness, #77, I do that too. Even in the used bookstore, I avoid the Oprah covers. I don't know why. I guess it gets people reading, right? I think it's this idea that a book didn't exist before Oprah discovered it. "Oh my gosh, you guys, you all must go out today and discover this great author I found, Charles Dickeeeens!" (with that monotone but increasingly louder voice).

This is stupid. I don't care what people think of me and what I read. I'm 19, a student at UCLA, and yes, sometimes I do want to read about jessica's love life instead of the history of architecture every once in a while. Why wouldn't people understand that?

I absolutely love Elle and while I think they're new format is a bit annoying, they still mix a high and low of fashion and ideas that other mags do not.
As for JEssica Simpson, the girl is coming into her own in the public eye. I think the country route is going to be great for her. She was a third rate pop singer and trying to be something she is not. She's a pretty girl and so much less annoying than that poser sister of hers. I do find it terrible when a mag puts someone embarrassing on the cover, ie Paris Hilton. It stays in my bag on the subways those days.

What the hell cesarcmma? There's ELLE all over Latin-America. There is one in Brazil, other in Argentina and other in Mexico.

And about Vogue: there's three edition. The general Latin-America one with the recycled spreads, the Mexican one with most of the recycled spreads and different ads and the Brazilian one with some recycled spreads some new ones and different articles.

I'm an adult so it doesn't bother me what others think of who is on the cover of a magazine I might happen to be carrying around.

With that said I don't care for JS and I do not think she represents fashion or Elle. It was a surprise to find her on the cover this month.
