"It's very embarrassing when you meet, like, a Russian prostitute, and she says she's a supermodel. And you're like, "Hey, me too!" - Stephanie Seymour to Vanity Fair on the misuse of the ubiquitous term.

This is hysterical! There are just a few names that I associate with supermodel: Linda, Naomi, Cindy, Kristy, and Stephanie. That's when models had their biggest moment. They were larger than life. It is not now. Great as they are, it is not Gisele, it is not Carmen, and it sure as hell was never Janice Dickenson!

so when she says 'russian prostitute' is she actually referring to russian prostitutes, or is she referring to russian models and implying they're all essentially prostitutes?

if you're running into a lot of actual prostitutes at parties, perhaps it's time to change your circle of friends.

What a tacky comment. I doubt Stephanie runs into many Russian prostitutes. At least I hope not. So what is this all about? Russian models? I dunno, but Natalia V, Sasha, Vlada, Maryna, Natasha Poly, etc. don't strike me as hooker types.

So funny! Chill out guest 7. I like a few of the models you've named, but you must admit we've come a long way from Stephanie and the TRUE, larger-than-life, one name supermodels, to the current serious of strung-out Eastern European 15 year olds.

This person... telling everyone to chill out. People are entitled to their own opinion. Really. By the way, Stephanie's status as a true supermodel (which she undeniably is) doesn't make her comment any less arrogant.

her comment is witty and controversial and in one sentence sums up the status of affairs of modeling at the moment. just take it for what it is. you know we're all thinking it (generally, not specifically) and she said it. really, aren't we all a bit over the transylvanian refugee look already?

I'm commenter 8. I am aware of Russia's geography and the political implications of my joke--would you prefer pan-Slavic (which actually I am!)? Just being silly.

I like the current crop of models, but I don't think I'm alone in wishing for a change. I think that's why we all loved Kate Moss when she came around in the nineties because we were ready for something different than the glamazons of the late eighties/early nineties. Now we look at them and think, let's move on from this look that has dominated for several years.

Commenter 12: since when is Russia NOT considred part of Eastern Europe? My family is Russian/Polish and consistently describe ourselves as Eastern European, so maybe you're the one who needs to do a little fact checking.

Guys - this is Stephanie Seymour! Have we forgotten her history and reputation? Wikipedia sums it up pretty well. Anyone expecting a "classy" or "educated" comment from her is going to be greatly disappointed. Perhaps one day our good old all-American girl Stephanie can take tact lessons from dirty Russians like Natalia Vodianova or Sasha Pivovarova.

@15 - while i think the UN considers russia at least trans-european, the whole "eurasia" thing, russia is part of asia under the traditional seven continent view.

anyway it's not that important. continue to argue about it though if you want.

@19- I did a project on Russia a few years ago and my brother lived their for a couple years. West of the Ural Mountains it is part of Europe and east of the mountain range is part of Asia. So most Russians actually can be described as Eastern Europeans- which is why model bookers/agents/etc. say the Russians et al are Eastern European...and why people consider Asians underrepresented in the modeling industry.

But back to the quote, I don't think we ever can have another true batch of supermodels because the term is so overrused. Every new model is hailed as a supermodel by her mother agency or friends back home...basically saying someone is a supermodel now is saying they walk or have walked international runways... if anyone today could be called one though, I would go for Coco Rocha, Jessica Stam, Hilary Rhoda, and Doutzen Kroes- all are unbelievably gorgeous, incredibly talented, wildly successful, have big personalities, and/or fantastic style

Holy crap...in two sentences, Stephanie Seymour manages to dismiss the current crop of models and take a swipe at the industry today.

But she does have a point. Many articles I read about the Cannes film festival mentioned how at the private parties on the yachts, where there were wealthy businessmen in the movie-making industry, there were plenty of models, many of them currently in the pages of Vogue. Then again, has anything changed?

BTW, seven continents categorization is old-school. New method is N. America, Latin America, Eurasia, Southern Asia, East Asia, Africa, Oceania, and Antarctica. They finally decided to lump places together based on human culture (or lack thereof).

i have to disagree with the guest at 7:12. yes, the era of the supermodels is over, but if anyone could be called one today, i think it'd be natalia vodianova, kate moss, daria werbowy, and gisele bundchen, for their frequent appearances on magazine covers and many campaigns.

kate and gisele are most definitely supermodels.
i can't believe you guys forgot aggy, though. now she is larger than life and is as much of a celebrity as kate.

Aggy is more known for her talent for self-promotion then her modeling work. Unlike Kate, Gisele, Natalia and Daria. I see Aggy is a total wannabe. Having said that, no one in the US, outside of the fashion industry, has heard of the non-Victoria Secret girls - Kate Moss being the exception. But everyone knows of Adriana Lima (rolling my eyes, but oh well)...

The comment is brilliant. Stephanie Seymour IS a supermodel to this day. Everyone who has a problem with what she said is hating b/c she's gorge.
Also none of the girls today can call themselves supermodels. I can barely put a face to the name and that's a shame.
