Obama Gets a Fashion Line

Aug 18, 2008 @ 11:34am

Obama Fashion TeeStiletto liberals rejoice:

Barack Obama is getting his own Fashion Line.

Starting next month, about a dozen items - mostly totes and tees - will be on sale at Obama.com and they'll be different from those MoveOn sweats in one crucial way:

They've been sketched out by Diane Von Furstenberg, Derek Lam, and other CFDA members, including Tracy Reese, whose Obama scoop neck can be seen at left. The clothes will also have a launch party at Charles Nolan's studio on September 9 - during New York Fashion Week.

Robin Givhan reveals the whole project in the Washington Post, noting "the risk, of course, is being perceived as highbrow or shallow. Obama's opponents have derisively dismissed him as an elitist and a celebrity. And it was the fashion industry that spawned the celebri-monster known as Paris Hilton. Having Seventh Avenue on his roster of supporters would not seem conducive to a Dockers-man image."

We're not completely sure that fashion did spawn Paris Hilton - unless Page Six is considered a direct arm of the style industry - but she's got a point. She's also got a guarantee from Tracy Reese that she will sport the Obama tee at some point this Fashion Week, and that's a really big deal.

Note that this isn't the only fashion initiative tied to Democrats this season - Anna Wintour famously hosted a Calvin Klein dinner for Michelle Obama last month, and the Senator's wife was also the inspiration for the September cover of Harper's Bazaar, which starred Tyra Banks.

Come August, NYLON Guys also gets into the mix - they've donated their entire back cover to Obama's campaign, a first for a national fashion title.

Meanwhile, McCain has the devout support of Hills star and designer, Heidi Montag.

As a former Republican, turning more liberal each day, it still bothers me that being a Democrat is socially cool. It isn't that I believe all celebrities or people in art are ignorant, I simply think that Tracey Reese possibly influencing a vote because she's wearing a T-shirt is silly. And while I adore fashion and everything glitzy, I would hope that one's politcal ideology is based off politics, not celebrity.

And if Heidi Montag was smart she would endorse Obama if she is a real McCain supporter...maybe that would gain some votes for McCain.

I don't simply think voting Democatic is socially cool, just as being "anti-Iraqi war" is unpatriotic or treasonous. Many people feel inspired by Obama as well as McCain. It just so happens many in the fashion world, Hollywood communties, or "celebrity" personalities choose to support Obama. Jon Voight, Tom Selleck and others have publicly supported McCain. People are just realizing that our economic times are hard, the value of a dollar has dwindled, 2 wars are still lingering, and gas prices have exploded considerably high in the last few years. Some may find it hard to scream "I am proud to be a Republican" these days.

i am so sick of all of this obama business. people want a change, i understand. but our economic standing is not going to improve with him in office. the only reason why so many celebrities endorse obama is because they love to help others and reach out. im sorry, but i dont appreciate tax dollars being raised and well earned money being distributed to the poor. and those who think this war with iraq will be over once obama steps in is wrong. if he decides to pull out, be prepared for another attack.

rant over.

I want to live where guest #1 lives -- in my town it is most definitely *not* socially cool to be a Democrat -- we're outnumbered 4-1.

yes, i cannot wait! i don't think being a democrat is necessarily "socially cool," it's just that the people in the fashion industry and hollywood--where creativity and newness, not tradition, matters--tend to have more liberal views. to the guest at 1:53, you don't have your facts straight. obama is allowing bush's tax cuts for the rich to expire while cutting taxes for low- and middle-income americans. heidi montag probably has no idea what is going on in the world is supporting mccain just because her daddy is. i'm guessing the correct website is barackobama.com, which is obama's official website. goooo obama!

i think when it comes to something as big as this, especially in these times, people aren't just throwing their support to just anyone. i think people have become more and more interested in politics and getting their facts straight. so no, i don't think being democratic is socially cool, i just think that this "celebrity" image attributed to Barack is the result of people not being afraid to show what they believe in. it's really refreshing.

obama '08!
