So You Want to go to Fashion Week?

Aug 27, 2008 @ 3:52pm

band of outsiders glove invite.jpgPretty much every day this week, we've received e-mails from readers asking how to get into Fashion Week.

The sad truth is, you pretty much can't go unless you're invited.

But, we did just come across this: a concierge company called In the Know Experiences swears they can get anybody into any show - as long as you pay up.

We don't think it would be nearly as fun as crashing (maybe we'll DIY that one), but hey, now you know.

Tent shows are the easiest to crash...

I will be in NY during fashion week. I obviously won't be able to see the shows :( but what are some suggestions for fun fashion related things to do?

How to: Crash a Bryant Park fashion show:
Step 1. Storm past security, while barking into your phone about being late and rummaging through your bag.
Step 2. Bypass the check in and go straight into the holding line to get in. Stick to the center of the crowd and don't make eye contact.
Step 3. Once inside, mull about in the back and once the lights go down, have a seat and make sure to grab a goodie back.

And this is the problem with your website, you are so young and mainstream , you are bound to have readers that don't know how fashion week works.
People that probably think you guys get invited to all the shows, and you sit front row and center.
And there's nothing wrong with not knowing all of this, but it does become a problem when these people try to apply for internships at magazines, pr companies, labels, or *worse* go to school for a career in fashion...
It won't stop unless you stop talking about Coco like a celebrity (because it is warped that some of your readers worship Coco and Aggy , but have never heard of , say, Elsa Schiaparelli) , unless MTV stops glamourizing Lauren Conrad's life and in turn the viewers realize she goes to FIDM in LA, the "jobs" she has are internships she's scored because of MTV, and she gets paid a TON for the show and that's where she gets for her lifestyle.
try to make yourselves a little more exclusive, and cultured Fashionista.

AMEN #7. I loved loved loved Natalie's spot on analysis of the YSL Mondrian dress and why F21's copy was a little strange. I wish the site paid the same attention it gives to models to the history of fashion and its relation to art history, and more of the scope of the business. HELLO Karl Lagerfeld is not the end all and be all, neither is Kate Moss...what about Vionnet or Madame Gres, Poiret, etc???? Obviously they have this knowledge and some interesting insight, as proven by Natalie's comment, I just wish they would share it...instead of OMG Whitney's working at DvF. I am all for the de-glamorizing of fashion. Less emphasis on the reality TV shows, Lauren Weisberger novels, etc. I would rather people do their HW than make inferences from SATC et al.

fashionista, please please please don't listen to the pretentious commenters #7 fauvism3. I'm fine with you the way you are. sure, sometimes I get a little bit annoyed by your coverage, but I get over it, because it's your blog. I for one love every bit a piece of fashion and the industry, so as long as you're covering any part of it, i'll be here reading.

to #7 and fauvism3, why don't you just start your own blog and write about people like Elsa Schiaparelli and Mme Gres? It's a niche that needs to be filled, and I would read that too. Fashionista can cover whatever it wants, and until you two are writing for it, you're not going to change it. Until then, you can either keep reading and leave your mouths shut or just leave. I'm sure most people here won't miss you

Seriously, AMEX concierge (special or not) has definitely gotten me tix to multiple (FANTASTIC) shows at Bryant Park multiple times when I've been slighted by a select few designers/houses.

7 here again.
9, I think my problem in the end is more with the readers than the people behind the blog, obviously Natalie et al know their stuff, most of the time the blog has amazing coverage and they're just covering fashion, whether it is Whitney Port or YSL. Sure, they make me nd fauvism3 happier when they cover other aspects of the industry but in the end they are just catering to all.
The problem here is when the readers confuse fashion with celebrity and obsess over the models, or over the girls from the hills and aspire to that without having any actual knowledge of the industry.
Read the post again 9
"Pretty much every day this week, we've received e-mails from readers asking how to get into Fashion Week."
Who are these people reading Fashionista that want an in into fashion week through a blog? (a 1 year old blog at that) If they are into fashion then fine read away, but don't get so wrapped up in the glamour of the shows and the parties and then aspire to that. Natalie and the rest of the crew (especially Faran) can tell you how long they've been trying to "crack" the industry (so to speak) it is not easy and it is certainly not done through e-mailing your blog roll, or crashing a few shows. My concern is for the people that don't differentiate between the fact that its an industry and the fact that its the business of fashion and glamour. It could help if the blog helped to make this difference apparent.
Because through the eyes of hipster irony or people who actually are in the industry a fun piece about Whitney Port or Agyness or even F21 now and then is fine, but to the people that want to live and breathe that , it is certainly not helping out.
