Solid Kate, Not Plated

Aug 28, 2008 @ 9:31am

golden kate.jpgWe sincerely wish we were any of the young children who'll surely be forced on a field trip to the British Museum this fall.

Why? Because as of today, the museum's Nereid Gallery includes another version of Marc Quinn's yoga-pose sculptures of Kate, and this time, it's made entirely of gold.

Marc, like us, considers Kate to be the Sphinx of today, so naturally, making the first purely gold statue since the time of ancient Egypt, with Kate as subject, makes total sense.

British school children, rejoice. This is a hell of a chance for some great field trip pictures!

I agree with number 2!

the estimated value of the material is worth about 1,5 million pounds.

and while indulging now isnt something i believe immoral, i really dont see why someone who did so little for other human being or the world in general should be immortalized in such a why - especially not if you think of the things that could have been achieved with this kind of money.

the actual market value of the gold is $1.47 mill putting the labor value at about $1.4 mill.

while gold does have industrial uses it is viewed as a precious metal used primarily in jewelry. i dont see whats wrong with using gold to sculpt a beautiful woman.

Kenya, you're missing the point, when you immoratalized in solid gold it's usually because you made an important contribution (either good or bad) to the world, not just because you're beautiful. This is a disgusting indulgence.

I agree, especially since gold, copper, etc. are in high demand. Kate has done what exactly...? Taught her daughter and millions of girls that doing coke will only benefit you and get you MORE ad campaigns? It is a work of vanity, not art, and there is a huge distinction.

Art is art if someone says it is, quinn isn't saying that this work is a monument to a national hero, and it wasn't paid for by the state. Art shouldn't be bound by these types of concerns, especially not (subjective) moral values...you people sound like giuliani (not a good thing!)

Really? This reads logically to you? Huh. Also, I never thought a museum could jump the shark but today I was totally proved wrong.

I love Kate to death, I love her, but this is ridiculous, it's going to go straight to her head. She's an amazing as hell model, but why, out of all of the amazing people that have fought for justice and all of the amazing ROLE models out there, would he choose her? It's just kind of wrong, even if it is art. He's making her into some kind of idol.

Let's all join together in the celebration of a woman who has never held down a real job, dates druggie rock stars, snorts coke and parties her life away - while taking care of her daughter. What a complete waste of resources... And editorial space in all the magazines and newspapers that have covered this piece of "news"!

I'm glad others believe this sculpture is a waste of gold... Kate is a great model and everything but she hasn't done anything to deserve this. Seriously, solid gold? Ridiculous.
