Stella Throws a Tantrum

hockley with stella ad.jpgStella McCartney spotted a model wearing one of her bras underneath a fur coat and is not happy.

The designer noticed the ad, from UK furrier Hockley, in September’s Vogue UK, and according to The Dail Mail’s source, went “absolutely ballistic”.

Stella’s as well known for her anti-fur, anti-leather, be kind to animals stance as she is for her designs and for being her father’s daughter - so yes, we understand why she’s pissed.

But we can’t understand who, aside from the handful of women who might own that bra, would recogize it as Stella’s, not to mention who exactly Stella thinks will splurge on the $12,000 mink Hockley coat based on the black lace bra underneath.

(We’ve also wondered how the designer feels about Net-a-Porter accessorizing her clothes with a leather Chloé bag or Christian Louboutin’s leather booties…)

How vendors choose to merch her stuff is up to them, but to prominently use her design in an advertisement to sell fur is pretty offensive given her stance on the subject. How dumb was the person that styled the ad? I would be angry too if I were her...

i look at it as once the bra is on the market then people are free to do whatever they want with it.

stella can throw a fit but it doesn't mean she will get her way.

Well, now I know it's a Stella McCartney.

I can understand why she's upset, but once someone's bought one of her pieces they can wear it with whatever they want, whether Stella likes it or not.

To #2:

This isn't out in the market. It's essentially representing a fur brand in an Ad that will be seen by a large group of people worldwide. It's not some woman on the street choosing to wear Stella with fur.

No to mention that the people/person who styled the ad is most likely familiar with fashion and pulled that bra knowing it's Stella. To prominently display it against fur while selling fur is sort of a slap in the face?

I think Stella is quite justified...whoever decided to dtyle this ad obviously didn't do their research. Shouldn't stylist be more fmailiar with designers they use...espeically top designers? every one is aware of Stella's stance aganist the use of fur.

Personally, I think Stella needs to get over herself.

Human beings have been wearing fur ever since we came down from the trees, and lost our own. In some parts of the world, if the native people didn't wear fur garments, they'd freeze to death.

I've never had a problem with people wearing fur; as long as the animal it's obtained from was treated humanely during it's life, and death, and it's not an endangered species.

There is such a thing as "ethical fur"; which is obtained from invasive species - usually introduced as a result of colonization - that have become a pest or a threat to native species.

Rabbits that were introduced into Australia and New Zealand, by European colonists, have become a huge problem for both countries. And, cause major damage to the native flora there - which, in turn, is wiping out the food supplies of native fauna, threatening them as well. Also, Australian Possums that were imported to New Zealand, in a naive attempt to establish a fur industry there, have become so pervasive that they now number in the millions. These creatures have proved to be so destructive - they're big eaters of leaves, bird eggs and chicks - that many of New Zealand's forests, and several native bird species, are now threatened with extinction.

Since these invasive species are going to be culled anyway, it would be wasteful not to use their carcasses for something productive.

I think it does make sense that she is upset and I find it a bit insensitive that they did not at least contact her to see if it was alright given her stance on the subject.

She works towards a better more humane world. Anything that has her name on it should not be used to support such a cruel world when she does so much good. There is NO such thing as humane fur. to the reader that tried to justify the fur industry, do you really think the fur is coming from stray possums in New Zealands forests?!?! HAHA. It is coming from innocent animals, bred for one purpose, to DIE. Who's death is usually broght on by having their anuses electrocuted so that the fur isn't damaged.

open your eyes. Animals are in no part ours to harm.

We make such a fuss about the fur industry but animals are treated as a commodity by the food industry...
Regarding Stella Mc Cartney stance I don't understand why she pretends to be a hardcore animal lover yet she was financed by Gucci who is a leather goods manufacturer.
This is just another case public of pointless public relation.
Free publicity and name check in the press.
Stella Mc Cartney wears 'vintage leather'in private anyway.Bless her.
'Fashion without cruelty' has a long way to go.
Much ado about nothing.

How ridiculous. If you make a product people can use it in whatever way they see fit. Unless you want to live in Communist China.

#10. Yes, we do have a humane eco-fur industry here in New Zealand, and other countries are keenly interested in it.

These possums are more than just strays; They are a human-introduced, invasive species, with no native predators and diseases to keep them in check. As a result of the conditions here in New Zealand, which are like paradise for them, there are now over 70 million of them. So, it's not like a few strays in the forest. It's more like a massive invasion force bent on destruction and conquest.

If you understood anything about ecology, then you'd know that this situation is unacceptable, very destructive and unsustainable.

#12. Have you studied biology and human evolution? I didn't think so.

If you believe the argument that "humans have been wearing fur since the beginning", then you are just as backwards as the stylist responsible for this ad! These kinds of arguments are the reason we are digressing as a society, and ultimately ruining our planet. Stella has made a huge impact by creating only vegan clothes and accessories, and more people need to follow suit!
