Streetwalker: Almost Famous?

Got Her: At Broadway and Prince.

Stalked Her: Because ever since we saw Gucci's Fall 08 collection, we've been on the lookout for cool gypsy inspired pieces. This hippie chick's blouse definitely fits the bill. Plus who doesn't want to channel Penny Lane every once in awhile?

Shot Her: Because her top looks comfortable and breezy now, but will translate perfectly into fall when paired with black skinny jeans and boots. Her short shorts and slight wedge keep the billowy look flattering. And while we usually stay away from a matching purse/shoe combo, it actually pulls the look together in this case.

She says: "I bought my blouse in Brooklyn. It's vintage."

We say: Cool. Just don't call her Lady Goodman.

Those dashiki tops are pretty popular on eBay. They always go for a ton. And they certainly will now.

"I bought my blouse in Brooklyn. It's vintage."

Isn't it always?

"It's vintage." Are there two other words in fashion that can so easily make you look utterly arrogant? I guess the "Brooklyn" (not Williamsburg by chance?) part only adds to it.

Ooh! My friend has that top! It used to belong to her mother. Cool. I'll have to tell her to wear it.

The kork-ease work really well with that look, too. She looks comfy and not too hippy-dippy.

Wow.....not until this chick have i seen this look pulled off with such ease. Great choice of textures pulling this look off too. Hopefully we wont see TONS of girls replicating this same exact look throughout Brooklyn..

I believe Gucci Fall 08 was inspired by cossacks, not gypsies. In fact, confusing the two is pretty far off since gypsies are a stateless people and the Cossacks have a rich Russian and Ukrainian tradition as the Slavic people.

But cute outfit!

guest #4, the answer is no. There is nothing more pretentious than that comment.

I like her look. But this is an African print, not gypsy. Walk through any market in West Africa and you will see these piling up on the stalls. And the people you see wearing them will not tell you "its vintage."

Commenter #12 nice way of being casually racist by creating the false juxtaposition of "stateless people" vs. "rich Russian and Ukrainian tradition". It's not that the Roma don't have a rich tradition...

way to look way too into my comment, commenter #15. I was meaning that the two are not the same, and they should not be confused. Not that one was rich and the other poor. In fact, the stateless reference was straight out of wikipedia, so take it up with them.

Racist? Seriously? Why is that always the argument?

Yeah, this top is definitely West African. I have a vintage one, too, and it's so great for summer, but there are a couple of stores in my neighborhood (Fort Greene) that sell them new.

gypsies? cossacks? what?

i live in cairo, and there are plenty of sudanese men here wearing this exact same shirt... but of course not with shorts and wedges, more like with beards and shishas.

My brother owned an identical dashiki in the early 90s, back when he used to cornrow his hair. lol.

This is a cute look though. Very casual, very summer.
