The Greatest Rumor of All Time

Aug 07, 2008 @ 9:40am

vlada at mcqueen fall 08.jpgWWD is telling me that Alexander McQueen is on Target's radar.

Did we put him there?

"According to industry sources," he's in talks to create a capsule collection under their Go International label, following in the footsteps of Luella and Proenza. We never thought he'd actually do a mass collaboration, and if so we would've pegged him for H&M, but the fact that he's chosen Target makes us love him even more.

The rumor is enough to give us a mini heart attack and make us put the money for this morning's latte in a McQueen only jar - if it actually happens we don't know what we'll do.

How in the world will McQueen's tear-inducing gowns, royal fabrics and intricate detailing transfer to our Brooklyn Target? It seems impossible, though of course if anyone can do it, it's him.

Oh Target, we love you so.

ps. For the next one, please call Vivienne Westwood!

Personally I will shoot myself if Target etc. does another collaboration. I know they sell well and democratizes high fashion, but McQueen is an aspirational brand and highly artistic, from look to cut to fabric, etc. There is a reason he is not one of PPR's biggest moneymakers. Besides McQ is already disgusting as it is....do we really need another one?

no! if target does the line it'll be crap! i've only like a couple of rogan pieces and nothing else that come from target's diffusion lines. he should go to h&m, at least the pieces will be more well made there. target clothes suck.

As interesting as this may be, I think the answer is that it won't 'transfer.' I was just at Target today looking at the Richard Chai pieces, and what I noticed with them as with other capsule collections up to this point is that the clothes seem to be made more cheaply than the regular Target pieces in the rest of the clothing section (example: Xhilaration, Mossimo). The fact that they cost more isn't unreasonable (they are designer collaborations), I just don't see why they should be made so poorly when clearly there is a better way to do inexpensive clothes. I usually get excited about the Go International previews, but they just don't manage to translate to the stores (with the exception of a Richard Chai dress I bought on said visit today, of course :) ).

Man, am I Debbie Downer, or what?

The appeal of lines like this is more "OMG it's McQueen" than "Hey, I like this and it happens to be McQueen for Target." Isn't that the only appeal? Their diffusion stuff isn't that cute or well made, the appeal is all in the designer cachet...
