Will Agyness Change Your Style?

Aug 01, 2008 @ 4:02pm

agyness style.jpgGlamour Magazine has an upcoming feature in their September issue, entitled, "Seven People Who Could Change Your Style."

The list includes Pat McGrath, Victoria Beckham, Christian Louboutin, Alber Elbaz, Takashi Murakami, and Serge Normant. It also includes Agyness Deyn.

Now granted, none of these people are particularly groundbreaking - tell us that in 2009, Alexa Chung will change our style, and we might really listen - but it's still interesting to know that Glamour is suggesting Agyness Deyn, whose look is often considered very punky, very young, and very fringe.

So how will Agyness change a Glamour reader's style?

Well, maybe they'll feel better about a shorter hair cut, or a brighter eye shadow, or even wearing patterned tights with their DVF shifts to work.

The Aggy spread is below; it was shot by Brigitte Lancombe, and it's excellent.

the outfit is very Agyness, and i love the booties! however i don't believe she's someone a Glamour reader would we interested in--her style is too young and not as mature.

Love her. Love the fresh face and shoes...

And before there are a ton of posts complaining about Agyness, please note:

NO, you are obviously not the only one who doesn't get her intrigue, but a lot of people do. And she is clearly here to stay for awhile, so please take a deep breath and try to DEAL WITH IT.

Wow, I honesly do not feel the spread has captured what is perhaps Agy's best quality, which is effortlessness. I feel it all looks too unlike her...

And the list?... I seriously don't agree with those names, is that just me?

IMO she's adorable, would def book her, but let's be honest--she is not a trailblazer in any way. Her look (punky bleached hair, boy/girl, etc.) has been done several times before starting in the mid seventies with sean casey then jenny howorth and leslie weiner--and a bit of a stretch go back to edie sedgwick, and further back to jean seberg in breathless!
Her personal style of dress, the funky, rock n roll mix of high and low has been done before as well--perhaps she has a real flair for it that makes her stand out amongst her peers, but who knows.
I've heard she is a charming down to earth girl (so far), so that has to have something to do with this, but really as a great style influence? I doubt it!
In any case, rather her over some nightmare creature like Christina Aiguelara (sp?), or even so called best dressed icon like Jlo!!

I personally LOVE all people on that list.

Someone like Victoria Beckham who has such balls and wears exactly what she wants has really inspired me to push my own style sometimes.

And Deyn?I adore the girl, of course others on that list speak for themselves aswell.

I am looking forward to my issue arriving.

I've heard from photographers that she's one of the nicest, most charming models to work with.

Not my cup of tea, but I guess her personality says something.

I used to hate her and not get her appeal at all. then I met her. Lord, the girl is BEAUTIFUL, much much better in real life, she is adorable and really nice. she has a doll face (the same night i also met claudia schiffer, aggy wins hands down). maybe she is passè and getting to the boring stage, but in the past few year she played a huge role in defining London's style, and she deserves all credit for that.

I am so very weary of Ms. Hollins...this overexposure is killing me. I certainly do not want to imply that she is anything less than a wonderful person and I understand that you have a certain period of time to pull in as much monetary gain as possible during an inevitably limited modeling career, but...ugh.

i love her style. i think it truly defines "glamour" and style- its who you are, and how you want the world to see you, its not just whatever everyone else is wearing- its creating your own trends. fashion should make you think, and make you go out on a limb and truly show who exactly you are. some will like it and some wont- but thats what fashion should be, it should never be boring, and i really dont think she is.

HIPSTER ALERT!!!!! Oh Laura Hollins, how you slay me! The funny thing is that I saw a picture of her in French Vogue March 2005 among a smattering of aspiring models at the time and her style was completely different, simple Jean jacket with jeans and her hair looked a bit fuller albeit still short.

PS Her age was listed as 21, BACK THEN, so we need to stop claiming she's a young thing. After all, the readings from the book of Carine never lie.

I personally do not like the particular outfit chosen for this Glamour spread. It reminds me of this girl I saw at the mall today trying to sell me cheap makeup from a kiosk.

I think Agyness looks more suited in some of the more futuristic, modern and sleek looks she has modeled in Vogue, although I am not sure if these represent her "personal style."

Ugh. Yes - thank you to everyone who who ignores the ridiculously-spelled "Agyness", the ones who point out that she has finally 'fessed up to being 25 (in that i-D special dedicated to her) and those who have rejected the force-feeding of a model-as-product-by-House-of-Holland. I live in London and am quite happy Burberry dropped her from their ubiquitous adverts as I couldn't take it anymore. We still have to listen to the 5 O Clock Heroes (yes, WHO??) moan about how now they only get asked about her part on their one single, and have to deal with the unfortunate daily couples-shots of her and Albert Hammond Junior's Hair, but otherwise, really, the rest of the world is REALLY TRYING TO FORGET ABOUT HER.

I think Aggy is a completely reasonable person to highlight as an example of someone who could influence you to change up your personal style, but it is a totally different arguement if you're saying that she has totally unique personal style. She looks like every other hip person from east london has looked like for like 30 years.

Yay to everyone who has pointed out that Agnes (I will NOT USE HER RIDICULOUS SPELLING) is totally derivative and not particularly unique. Although she's pretty, and I have no problem with her success as a model, I just don't think she's some iconic figure. She has not created trends--she's copied them, exactly, from British punk, and perhaps the only way she's "updated" or "translated" the style for the mainstream is that her hair is platinum instead of blue and she does not have piercings.

To me she personifies 'new London' (sorry for the lame phrase). As in, the young girl who is taking a bit of a risk in mixing things up fashion-wise. To us she's not ground breaking, but we're fashionistas. To the average bod on the street (in the UK, or US or anywhere), she personifies a youthful exuberance which wasn't there before. When I see those daily pics of her in The London Paper on her bike, hanging with that guy from The Strokes or at a club, she always looks like her, as opposed to other celebs wearing the trend of the moment. I know her look isn't that original in the grand scheme of things and even she would admit her look is a jumble of retro influences (Debbie Harry, Clash, Jean Seberg etc) but you know you won't see her in high-waist jeans, hippie hairbands or any other obvious trend the way someone like Mischa Barton would wear and I think that's refreshing. Alexa Chung is cool and pretty but Agyness has more impact - mainly with the hair I guess. So, I'd say she is influential as she just seems to inspire young people to be experimental which is a good thing.
