Would You Still Wear It?

Aug 11, 2008 @ 2:11pm

heidi_montag.jpgI've had a long love affair with Hermès. I love the house's sense of secret luxury; I love the connections with Grace Kelly and Jane Birkin; and I really love the Hermès tie I stole from my dad years ago because I loved the horses on the label.

What I don't love however, is Heidi Montag's recent habit of toting Birkins around LA to prove how much she loves "fash-on". Nor am I much inclined to smile when I see Pharell's giant purple crocodile travesty. I mean, don't we have Gucci for these people?

And yet, I still love Hermès despite myself, specifically the ladylike Constance, and anything with a shot of Jackie O. But every time I see some reality TV actress carrying a perfect beacon of elegance, I die a little inside. I think, "Am I really coveting the same stuff as Audrina?"

So the bigger question is, could you wear something that someone you loathed loves? Could you get over seeing say, Britney, walking around in those Roger Vivier flats you've drooled over? Or Megan Fox matching her night gowns with that Bottega Veneta knot clutch you've been waiting to buy?

And before you come out with "Oh, that's ridiculous," just think of how many names are ruined for you because of that bad college roommate or that mean boy on the playground. Sometimes, it's about the association.

And so, does that translate to what you wear?

I totally understand this. Specifically about Heidi and Hermes. I have been on an Hermes kick all year, and I can't tell you how disappointed I was with these pics of her. She has two kellys, a white birkin, and a ton of other smaller accessories. It's so annoying. When I finally saved enough to get an Hermes bag for my birthday, I totally didn't get these. I got one that not many people know about, so it still holds its secret luxury factor for me. Also, I think what helps with the Heidi situation is that she pics really gaudy colors for her hermes. I can't stand the blue jean or the etoupe kelly she's got. I prefer the older classic burgundies, blacks, and browns of the house. I think it's also funny that her white birkin is the same as pamela anderson's with different hardware.

Funny because there was this exact discussion on men.style.com but about Kayne rather than Heidi. I am with Brett--of course it's annoying, esp. to people who can appreciate the fabric, construction, design, and labor that went into it in addition to the house's prestige, rather than Heidi who only knows it because it's expensive and "Victoria has a bunch."

If I really like something, I might get it, but the fact that it is no longer "a YSL jacket" but instead "the jacket Kanye wore" is a bit disappointing.

On the other hand, I dont understand the hate for my man Pharrell. He is actually talented ( musically, fashionably...eh, BBC is alway hit or miss) but you cant deny that he knows how to dress.

I think that we can take solace in that these ladies probably borrow their Hermes, Bottega, etc. They don't own these things. I imagine many things come from their stylists closets, not their own. However, if we were to sit around all day worrying about whether or not our bags or shoes look like those of Heidi, are we not feeding into the Heidi/Spencer machine? I say forget about them and do your own thing. Most folks aren't in awe of Heidi. They hate her. Don't let her incite jealously. Bitch is lame!

i'm going to disagree and think it's kind of ridiculous to feel that way. hopefully, you ought to make something you love into something that is yours so it doesn't remind anyone of heidi. it becomes your style.

but, if i did agree with brett, i wouldn't include pharell and kanye in that category because they actually became famous for having talents. after all, jane birkin and grace kelly were both very stylish actresses. i'm sure if there were more paparazzi then we'd think them less elegant.

heidi montag, on the other hand, has contributed NOTHING to ANYthing, nor does she have a keen sense of fashion, so i'm not sure why anyone throws even the slightest glance towards her.

it's an issue of taste, class, how you wear it...put britney spears in the same marc dress as sofia coppola. coppola will always win, cause spears will always look like she's wearing a cheap knockoff.

Heidi does not have a stylist, or if she does, she needs a new one STAT.

Kanye, Diddy, and Pharrell have no personal style, it's all an affectation/aggregation of street style and high fashion. Kanye is rightly famous for being talented, but the truth is that he did not pick out the (fill in blank) item, a stylist did, and he is not wearing it because he likes it, it's comfy, etc. but because it's YSL, or whatever.

I agree with Brett and Guest #2- It's frustrating to see tasteless paparazzi subjects toting around such luxurious and distinct accessories- I cannot help but question their respect and genuine appreciation for luxury houses like Hermes. Gucci is definitely more befitting of their demeanor and I can think of many people more deserving of a Birkin than miss Montag. Thankfully, she insists on purchasing these coveted items in colors that are so bold, they inevitably distinguish her from the rest of us- those who dream of owning a Birkin and those who do own one and wear it the way it should be worn: as THE accessory.

Maybe im dense, but i'm a little confused as to what this comment means..

I think Kanye and Pharrel both have great personal style, they take risks and think outside the box when it comes to fashion..i applaud any man who is willing to do so , esp if they are in the hiphop industry..with that being said..is it not fashionable if they wear a certain item?..
Granted Heidi can really kill and damage an item, because she has no style, she wear expensive items and looks trashy...
But with that being said is Hermes only for somone that has daddys money?..maybe " these people" can purchase hermes instead of gucci!

I feel it is quite high-schoolish to disregard or suddenly be repelled by something that a hated/disliked celebrity wears. If you feel this item has such great inherent value, it will be irrelevant that someone else owns it. As Rebecca pointed out, it's HOW you wear it, not that you just wear it. Britney Spears looked super-trashy in some of her high-end stuff back when. But, still it's normal to hate on these celebrities that could easily afford what we cannot afford. Fashion is to be enjoyed by all, so let's not draw brand lines for certain people. You say fashion is fun, so why so serious?

It makes me think that anyone can have this bag and that Heidi will probably sell some cheap version of it in her next Heidiwood collection.

It's definitely not the way to market something to me--I've certainly turned down jeans/tops/dresses because an over-eager salesgirl has said "Oh, Jessica Simpson has that!" But I don't think someone as temporary and unimportant at Heidi Montag could ever really impact the image of a brand like Hermes. They've spent over a century creating their reputation, and no tarty little starlet can demolish that with a single picture.

The internet has democratized a lot of things that used to be closely tied to a certain group or class of people, and this is an example of that. But just because someone like Heidi knows about or even wears a Birkin doesn't mean that's she's a part of the actual world that the Birkin represents, and she's still a poseur in the end.

There is nothing effortless or classy about her style so I could care less what she has. You can take the same bag, the same shoes..any accessory or outfit for that matter and put it on two different people with different styles and it won't be the same.

I totally 100% disagree. Only a handful of people in the world can actually afford Hermes bags. So if Heidi can (I'm not sure if hers is borrowed or her own or what), then she most certainly has the right to carry it. If it's such a "classic" as you praise it to be, then whoever carries it should have no affect on it's desirability. And your snobby comment about Gucci wasn't funny. I'd rather wear a great leather bag with trendy fringe (non-logo of course)from Gucci (whose Hysteria collection actually put me in a hysteria) than some stuffy, boring, ridiculously priced crap. I'm not sticking up for Heidi, because she obviously has no style and is just copying what she sees on her peers. Which is exactly what I think coveting an Hermes is. Owning an Hermes will NOT make you "classic & chic!" and it will NOT make you look like Audrey Herpburn/Grace Kelly/Jane Birkin/Insert boring stuffy celebrity here. I just don't see the hype.

Ok while I hate to admit this...I always read the 'Who Wore It Better' section in US Weekly when I'm standing in line at the supermarket. Whenever I see a bona fide fashion star pitted against a reality star wearing the same thing, I always cringe! I can't help it but it makes me feel like 1. I definitely don't want that item and 2. I hate the internet because it makes it so easy for silly reality stars like Heidi etc to follow fashion icons in an instant!
I think in the case of Heidi loving Hermes, Balenciaga and Chloe, its only so infuriating because she never does the clothes justice! I think everyone understands that Heidi has just attached herself to these labels for exactly that reason: they are labels! She wants to flaunt her status and show that she knows these big fashion names!
I don't think I am going to let them dictate what I am in to however, because at the end of the day its all about how you rock the clothes. The pieces could be $10 or $10,000 - it doesn't matter - Heidi only ends up looking silly!

I think it all has to do with association. Since Heidi would wear it, tacky rich girls might want it, too. Then if you get one, you're associated with them.
I also think the internet and the tabloids can ruin fashion somewhat since people who might not know anything about fashion, or who don't know how to style things well, could just take a trendy item and throw it over their usual Abercrombie/ UO outfit.
Or something. I'm really tired.
(I also may have repeated something someone else said. If so, I apologize.)

the LV label kind of goes through this, there are so many people with fake bags, and everyone and their sister has a LV, from Marey Carey the porn star to Lindsay Lohan and Anna Kournikova. If you have the taste and class, the bag and label changes to mirror the style of the wearer.

While Hermes may be a luxury goods maker, they also mass produce and mass market - how do you think they stock all those boutiques? So, their goods are by no means "exclusive", nor do they seem to want them to be.

If one wants something truly exculsive and "secret", the only way to get it is to go bespoke. That way, it's made for you, and only you.

In this day and age, with globalization and the rise of economic empowerment for all, anyone that wants so-called "luxury goods" can buy them.

All of you that don't think we live in a celebrity obsessed world, are clearly wearing rose tinted glasses. Celebrities are PR, no matter which way you look at it. When a celebrity wears a brand, in a way, they're endorsing it. Which is why they get so many freebies. I mean Paris Hilton single handedly turned me off Diane Von Furstenberg. Once I heard that DVF gives her the entire collection for free, every season, I first thought "well if she can give the entire collection away to someone who already has piles of money, why on earth would she need my measly $200" and second, I thought "Paris Hilton? That's who you want representing you? I don't identify with her at all". I now feel no need to buy DVF (no matter how gorgeous it may be). In a weird way, I feel that I'm being true to myself.

While it is sad to see such individuals carrying our favorite goods, it cannot be forgotten that true luxury brands like Hermes are timeless. Rather than monograms and labels, Hermes relies on quality to sell its goods, which explains the hoards of fans on waiting lists for their coveted bags. While Heidi's carrying of this teal mess seems like a shame, Heidi will be gone before Hermes's elegance and classic beauty ever does. A brand with such deep history will never have its reputation sullied by the people who may like it.

And regarding the Burberry comment - this is true, and a very applicable connection to make. It cannot be forgotten, however, that Burberry, like the trashily ubiquitous Louis Vuittons and Guccis of today, rely on monograms and logos to sell a lot of their goods. A nova check button down does not contain any real attention to detail or quality materials. Instead, it is an easily attainable piece of oversaturated and excessive branding. This billboard-esque styling is what ruined Burberry, and what is currently ruining a lot of "luxury" handbag makers due to the countless fakes and replicas being made.

Hermes will withstand the test of time, as the brand represents true luxury.

Pharell as fashion icon is laughable...fashion ICONS are people that have such a refined sense of style and know themselves...pharell's birkin is gross and as much of a status statement as Heidi's.

The argument as usual with this site has rapidly turned from the point Brett has attempted to make. Can a negative association ruin a brand or product? Certainly, if the individual feels strongly enough. Is Heidi enough to keep me from a classic Hermes, no. But in defense of Brett I love his elitist opinions they make me laugh. And is he pretentious? Yes, but he knows this and enjoys this quality in himself. I by no means would want any of the writers of fashionista to devoid their articles of opinions. It is interesting to read other fashion lovers take on various aspects of the industry and I feel Brett has one of the strongest voices on this site and a consistency in his views that differs from Natalie and Britt's. Also, his Gucci comment is not without a leg to stand upon.

this is true. after seeing lauren conrad carrying the chanel flap bag that ive been dying to have, it makes me want it a little less. i think that celebrities who have these things kind of cheapen the look of it and makes me not like it as much.

I completely agree! A few months ago I purchased my first Birkin (you can see my story about it on chicgirlstyle.com) and was so excited when it first came it. I ordered it in swift leather and in a new 2008 color called Lagon. Not two days later after receiving my Birkin I flipped open US Weekly to see Heidi (same picture as above) with a Kelly in my Birkin Lagon color! It almost ruined my Birkin excitement! I’m actually surprised Hermes hasn’t prevented her from purchasing but I guess anyone can buy off of Ebay.

I am so glad you guys covered this issue. I saw her with the Birkin about a month ago in some gossip mag and was in disbelief. It really upset me because it’s such a contradiction. The birkin represents classic sophistication, something Heidi (AND SPENCER) lacks. Of all the reality TV stars out there they are among the most pathetic because almost everything about them is obviously scripted & fake. Not only that but they actually enjoy the mocking publicity they get and encourage it. I mean did anyone see that Easter photo shoot with the niece done by the paparazzi... so sad, and such a poor attempt at agenda pushing. Seriously get a decent publicist for chistsake! So ya, Heidi doesn’t deserve the birkin and her association with it makes me extremely unhappy and uncomfortable

Just an FYI... the bag pictured is an Hermès Kelly, not a Birkin.

Fashionista, I am so disappointed. I agree with the previous poster, carrying a birkin does not give you sudden fame, class or elegance. And your idea that now you don’t want one because someone else is carrying one is ridiculous. Did you ever think the main reason why Jane Birkin, the person the bag was named after, doesn’t carry one anymore because of people like you who covet them for all the wrong reasons? Yes it is a quality bag, and yes has a deep history, but by no means is it exclusive to heiresses and people with old money. As a matter a factly most heiresses and people with old money are the ones who make them look cheap and trashy, because they aren’t taught what true quality is, they could care less because they’ve always been surrounded by it. Class and style can’t be bought or it doesn’t come with great-granddaddy’s bank account. You either have it or you don’t and judging from this article neither Brett or Heidi has any.
