Comme for H&M: Way Too Expensive

comme des garcons for hm ad 47.jpgWe just heard that the Comme des Garcons for H&M ad will be public very soon. We can’t show it to you yet, but here’s a fun fact from it:

The ad features a dress. And it costs $350.

Now, we get that Comme des Garcons goods come at a hefty price. But dresses from H&M? Really?

And if just one dress is $350, how much do you think those structured jackets will cost?

When we got our first full look at the line, we thought no one would buy it because it didn’t have enough mass market appeal to fly off the shelves.

But now, well, we just don’t think anyone’s willing to shell out hundreds at a crowded H&M checkout desk.

Scary... The ad has been in the style.com iphone application since fashion week, by the way

Something just wouldn't feel right about spending $350 on a H&M dress.

What exactly is the point of collaborating with H&M if you can't come remotely close to their price point?

I'm kind of glad. I hope the price point scares people away so I have a chance at the pieces I've had my eye on.

The W article mentioned a showpiece dress - probably very limited production and not indicative of the rest of the line's price point.

FWD great comment.

I can't figure out for the life of me who this line is marketed for or who the intended market for this line is. Is it for girls that love and know Comme des Garcon? Or is it supposed to appeal to a some kind of mass market? The price tends to point to category one. But, H&M seems more towards category 2. Confused.

I love love love Comme des Garcon and have met very few non fashion people that have any idea what I am talking about or share my joy when I finally bought my first piece of Comme des Garcon back in May. I can't wait to see what this stuff looks like in the store.

yeah, I saw the ad on the style.com iPhone app too and I was pretty shocked by the price.
But there isn't an h&m anywhere near me anyway... And they don't have a freaking online store.

Well, the viktor and rolf collection had a 400 dollar dress and didn't the cavalli one have an expensive item too? so maybe it's just along those lines...?

I too love CDG but the pieces I have don't look like the ad. I guess they're trying to top H&M Cavalli where dresses went up to $300. But let's keep things in perspective, you can get actual designer lines at the Barney's warehouse sale for less than $350!

. . .and you can buy Comme Des Garcons on eBay for under $350 (watch out for fakes though). So this is a bit confusing to me too, as a Comme Des Garcon fan (long before this collaboration with H&M came along). . .

I've got more preview of the collection and I reckon the only expensive garment is going to be the drees. Too much for H&M, but very little for CDG. Thus, worthy.

V&R had their limited wedding dress and Cavalli had the limited gold dress. Each designer has one limited item that will cost a lot more and will be the top piece of the collection. For CDG it will be the dress. (If you have allready seen it you will understand the cost.

Other pieces will have normal designer at H&M prices...
