First Look: Marc Jacobs

Sep 08, 2008 @ 11:31pm

Marc Jacobs Spring 09 32.jpgWhen you get to the Marc show, you suddenly feel like you don't know what to do. You have an invite, a seat (maybe), your camera and a purpose, yet, the sight of 4,000 or so people crammed into a stadium after a day of normal shows in normal 200-person spaces and packs of photogs stalking the front row / growling at each other could make even a pro a little nervous - and so with that, we tell you we were also a little giddy.

After squeezing into a good spot for photos (this is the only show where you can't just haunt the sides of the pit), a voice boomed over the loudspeaker, "Ladies and gentlemen, please take your seats now. The show is about to start." People clapped, wooed - we felt like we were at a junior high dance.

Then the lights disappeared and came back in spotlight-white. The music was like something from How to Marry a Millionaire - a long piano tune with horns, quick then slow, theatrical really, and mostly grand.

The girls came from all directions on the stage, pushing through swingy mirrored doors to take the runway which was chopped by super tall and skinny mirrored panels that made it look like the same girl was in twenty different spots of the runway at the same time.

The clothes were kind of complicated - lots of bunched up skirts, tons of stripes, obi-like waist wraps instead of belts, very shiny materials, collapsed glittery top hats in pinks and oranges, and shoes that were a cross between gladiators and geisha sandals - oddly, we may have picked up a Wizard of Oz vibe in there, but maybe it was just the buzz.

There were definitely some easily identifiable It items - we had an instant premonition of the blue and yellow wide-striped dress (at left) on either Leighton Meester or Joy Bryant, and we know the dark blue sweater with red glitter stripes will be an editorial/street style favorite.

But we'll have to see about the rest. We're still thinking about it, and we'll definitely meditate on it in our sleep tonight, but isn't that always the way with Marc? Sometimes it takes hindsight to really get his first look.

I LOVED it. I always do though. I am getting a very strong black, southern, carpetbagger, woman/mammy, type feeling from it. I am having memories from my childhood and dolls I would always get on vacation with my parents in Jamaica.

I had no idea what to expect and he surprised and wowed. Thankfully Marc does what Marc does consistently and you know there will be a reaction.

Sidebar: Posh looks like a fugly boy.

second picture from the last, purpleish and yellow dress: there seems to be a face appearing just below the belt from the fabric. anyone else seeing this? probably not intentional, as the solo shot doesn't show it, but pretty cool.

I absolutely LOVE this one- Marc manages to make glitter look wearable, and when that happens, there's never anything wrong with it!

i completely agree with the statement you made above about needing to think about and let marc's collections sink in. I was pretty disappointed when i saw his last collection at first and ended up finding it super inspiring.

Is it just me or do a lot of the collections this year seem more like fall than S/S?

I totally love Marc's new collection. Wasn't such a huge fan of the last. As with many of his collections, this is an inspirational style that someone could channel without actually buying any of his clothes. It's a lifestyle, not just clothing.

I appreciate this, as I cannot generally afford his clothes.

i think it's time for a new fashionista mascot: may I suggest EVELINA MAMBETOVA? just discovered her this morning checking out the slides of the marc show on style.com. She's not in their model directory yet, but is featured on Supreme Management's board. And she's the one in your pics above wearing the mustard boatneck top, apron and navy hat. (first pic in the fifth row) The pictures on Supreme's website give you a much better idea...she looks so cool and so unique!

loved it....i'm getting a very strong "the women" (the 1939 film version) vibe from it...i agree with the person who said that this feels a bit more like fall than spring...some of the looks have so many layers, and the color palette is so out of the ordinary for spring....

i always say that the season doesn't really begin until marc shows...he subverts everything we think we figured out about trends in the past couple days

You guys always have the best fashion week coverage! I was up late last night stalking all the fashion sites, and of course Fashionista was first with MJ!

I have to say that I loved the second half of the show much more than the first.

Only this site wouldn't recognize Gershwin when they heard it...

Otherwise great job on the coverage.
