Hermes Sale: The Deal

hermes elephant.jpgOk, we’ve received about 800 e-mails today asking about the status of the Hermes sale, so we dispatched Fashionista friend Rebecca Suhrawardi Austin from Papermag.com, and here’s what she saw:

1. The line is from the middle of the block all the way to Sixth Ave (they’re only letting in a certain number of people at a time) - but, we hear if you walk up like you’re somebody who shouldn’t be waiting in a line, they let you right in.

2. The whole thing is incredibly civilized: dressing rooms, tons of people to clean things up, polite employees, plenty of space to check things out, shelves, etc.

3. The goods are so-so: Don’t expect to find a Birkin - the bags are mostly canvas totes that we’ve never even seen anyone carry. There are hardly any shoes at all, and the clothes are mostly very uptown, very ladylike - think flowery dresses and cashmere sweaters. But at least there’s a wide range of sizes stocked - at this point, anyway - even the teeny-tiny ones.

4. This could actually be a decent place to get some impressive holiday gifts - there are tons of scarves and ties, and the menswear section is practically untouched. But also, there’s tons of china (mugs for $39), bathrobes (but like $342) and even baby booties ($54), if that’s your thing.

5. It might be easy to get in, but the line to pay goes all the way from the front of the space to the back, so that might be a little while.

Ok. And now you know.

Yesterday, the line to pay literally--without any exaggeration--took 2 hours to move from the back to the front.

Some people waited even longer...

There is tons of perfumes and scents (around $25 for some very nice gift boxes) and also a good selection of men's clothing. I got a pair of $500 slacks for $200--mind you Hermes almost never has sales.

There are some amazing men's suits, coats, and leather jackets but even at around $1000-$2000 (down from $5000 and up) it is still quite pricey--or a good deal depending on how you look at it.

i highly recommend walking up to the front of the line and strolling in like you own the place. for the regular people who wait in line, one you get to the door you are shuffled into groups of 12-13 to get into the elevator to go to the 4th floor. if you walk in and join one of the waiting groups - no one will even ask.
i did it today with a friend. we were shopping in less than 5 minutes.
...or you can wait in line for hours.

the line to pay goes in waves. sometimes there are 3 people in line...and then 10 minutes later there's 35. watch it and be strategic.

i saw the line this afternoon and i literally lost interest... went to West Elm got me self something nice... stopped by Old Navy got myself tons of stylish wears i can mix and match. See, I can look like Hermes without the long lines and breaking bank at times like this. (sighs)

Tons of ties -- all $102, tons of scarves all $225 but limited to 10 per person. Small leather goods not worth it, and who would realy buy Hermes china. They have belts only in small sizes.

They "toiletries" are worth it. Soap, $6.00 deordorant $5.40, Perfume $25, gift sets $37.50. Think holidays.

oOooo ! i was guest #3 and this afternoon i finally got in the Hermes sample sale! the line was short and it moved rather quickly but when i turned around the line formation was reaching near 6th Ave so i got pretty lucky!

They had shoes/boots for mens and womens. Clothes: button down shirts, blouses, sweaters, nice tops ... pretty pricey if you're budget is below $500 but still cheaper than the original retail price. lots of scarves, ties! there were few belts but all small sizes from what i saw. There are fabric handbags: sample sale price of $800 and up.

I got an Hermes scarve and some toiletries. not bad. I bought a total of 7 items. I'm happy.

Many thanks to Fashionista for the Hermes 411. A big OXOXO to ya!
