Interview's Closet: Help!

the interview cover with kate moss.jpgThat's right, the magazine that got the Kate Moss interview of the century needs interns for the Fashion Department.

Apply only if:

- You're available 4 days per week for the entire Fall semester

- You know your Ralph from your J. Lindeberg

- Lugging body bags filled with clothes and helping with all the credits in the entire magazine seems kind of exciting rather than excruciating

- You don't mind getting paid back for your Metrocard

E-mail your resume and brief cover letter to iviewinternship@gmail.com.

What kind of college student has 4 available days per week? One who doesn't have any classes?

^Exactly my thoughts. I also heard horror stories from the halls [or closet, whatever you'd like to call it] at Interview.

Free child labor demands, strikes again!

No experience on earth can make this internship worth it.

All of these internships make me wish I lived in New York!

Four days! That's excessive. I know you have to work your way up, but that's asking way too much.

I interned in their closet a few years ago. It's a great experience if you're a savvy intern and know what's going on around you. All the shlepping aside, had some great opportunities to be more hands-on because it's a smaller publication. However, the masthead has changed significantly since I left there. And as far as free child labor goes, what internship in fashion or design isn't? Some may say it's just paying your dues.

NewBarhmin,

The issue is that you and a lot of other people accept that they should be. If people stopped accepting it and started realizing that these companies can afford to pay at least min. wage, then maybe it wouldn't be free child labor. Maybe it would be a cool job that allows you to make a tiny bit of money in an already incredibly expensive city, while being a student, and getting real world experience.

If InStyle can afford to pay min. wage, if Hearst can afford to pay students of "diversity" [I won't even get into that issue right now] and even Conde Nast has started paying 12 dollars a day [better than my previous zero], then other magazines big or small should be able to. Same goes for fashion houses and designers. B.S. that Hermes can't pay you to be an intern, etc etc.

And if they can't pay you, it shouldn't be more than 2 days at 5 hours a day. Even Parsons is going to start limiting internships hours, demands, and amount of days. Perhaps that will start some sort of change.

xxi, I don't disagree with your views at all. We could go on about this topic for days. It's good to hear that Time Inc pays min wage, maybe they can set a standard.
