All Black Models at Sophie Theallet

Sep 09, 2008 @ 11:53am

SOPHIE THEALLET .JPGI woke up bright and early today - except it wasn't bright, it's thundering and raining - to trek across the city to Sophie Theallet's runway show. I abandoned all hope of appropriate Fashion Show outfits in lieu of ripped jean shorts and rain boots.

The only thing I knew about Sophie was that she was Alaia's right hand woman for a very long time, but that was really all I needed to know. I've been an Alaia devotee since Cher went to that party in the valley in her red dress.

Anyway, Sophie's clothes are nothing like Alaia's, but they're beautiful, just like the cast of stunning black models who wore her very simple, but perfectly constructed clothes down the sparse runway.

The collection started with a thin, white ruffled dress and slowly moved into prints and sheer black silk layered over brighter colors.

The stellar front row included Cathy Horyn, (who was also wearing jean shorts!!!), Michael Roberts, Grace Coddington, Nigel Barker and Sally Singer, who had a smile on her face most of the time.

That tells you more than I ever could.

It's SO NICE to see a designer using all girls of color! (And I'm not even one!)

I agree with guest @ 4:29. How is using an all black cast better then using an all white one? Besides, diversity extends beyond black & white. What about Chinese, Korean, Indian, etc. girls?

So 4:29pm and 6:30pm you are saying that most of the shows (as they are almost all white cast) are bad?
And all black Italian Vogue was as bad as all white (most of the time) french Vogue, american Vogue, V Magazine.
I think all back cast worked wonderfully for that show like all white cast as perfect for other shows.
What is bad to me is when no black girls or chinese or other ethnicities are to be seen on fashion runways, fashion ads and magazines at all.
I am black and I adoooore french vogue! Emanuelle Alt is my all time favourite stylist. Talent has no color.

for the person that insists that an all black show is just as bad as an all white show I say to you SHUT UP!! yea thats immature but it needs to be said This would not have to happen if all the major designers actually did something about it July has come and gone and we have yet to see any black girls gracing major publications here in the US u r obviousy caucasian and don't understand the pain of having a love hate relationship with fashion because of the blatant racism

please, it's not as bad as an all white cast because you only see one or two black models to begin with (if that many). i think it's refreshing that someone is giving the models that are equally as beautiful as their white counterparts a chance to be showcased. now what's next? to see a show with white, black, asian, latin and indian models, that's the next big step.
