Topshop Migrates to the US

kate moss ts.jpgIn between the shows, we’ve been indulging in some internet shopping R&R when we came across Topshop’s new US site. It’s not exactly the physical store (whose opening we hear is pushed back six weeks) but it does feature dollar signs instead of pounds, and the shipping is significantly cheaper, so it’s a step in the right direction.

You’ll be happy to know that the site features all the same things you love on the UK site. We’re particularly excited about the new Kate Moss for Topshop line, out this week. The clothes are classic Kate: rock n’ roll, quirky, bohemian and just plain cool. We’re already kind of in love with the black fringed coat.

But don’t get your hopes up. The collection is selling out ridiculously fast - you can imagine our frustration when we clicked on that beige Yeti coat to find the words “sorry, item out of stock.” In other words, you better click quick.

We’re crossing our fingers this means the actual store will be stocked with just as much cool stuff as the London ones, with not too much lag time. The only downside is, now that the prices are in dollars, everything seems a whole lot more expensive…

Things don't just seem more expensive--they are. If you compare the prices to those on the British site, they've simply doubled (or slightly more than doubled) the numbers, and then substituted a dollar sign for a pound. But the current exchange rate is closer to 1:1.75. If Topshop wants to succeed in the U.S, we need to get the same low prices as the English do!

The only annoying thing is that the US site has higher prices. I did a direct conversion from pounds to us dollar and its cheaper that way.

But back when they first announced this pricing scheme, the pound was at about $2. So if the dollar continues to strengthen against the European currencies, it will just get worse.

If you are buying a couple of items and spending a few hundred bucks, buy on topshop uk. Even with shipping its cheaper.

i hate their uk website, it's impossible to get anything, plus when you finally are able to place your order they write you telling that while processing the item got out of stock. Plus the shipping is totally slow.
still love the clothes tough.

I love that the US have higher prices at the moment because of the exchange rate.

Welcome to our world! We usually have to pay far more for clothes across the board. It's so irritating going into a store like AA and seeing a skirt $30/£25, just for one example. So this makes a nice change.

My worst fear about Topshop in the US was that they would start to sell the same clothes as in the UK but for lower prices.
