Topshop Opening Pushed to March

topshop opening fall 2008 not so much.jpgSomething we all kind of knew already:

Topshop’s opening’s been delayed, now pushed back to “mid-March,” or so Sir Philip Green’s saying so far.

He says it has nothing to do with the economy, and everything to do with overly ambitious design plans that need figuring out.

In the meantime, Topshop’s in talks with Opening Ceremony to see if they’ll continue to carry their pieces until Spring, and of course, we now have their US website.

But consider this: If all we’ve heard from anyone we’ve talked to - all fans of London’s Topshop - are complaints about the absurd pricing on the US site, can we really still say we’re all dying for the store to even out the chains of overpriced rayon on that annoying stretch of Broadway anyway? Because we’re not the only ones insulted by this $80, viscose Lanvin wannabe. And something tells us the site prices can’t be that different from the store’s…

i plan on using the store as a personal dressing room to try everything on, then rushing home to order it on the UK site. It ends up being cheaper that way.

I know that we're in the age of the credit crunch etc, but $80 is pretty much the equivalent what the dresses cost in the UK, and £40 doesn't exactly brake the bank...so you don't like the dress? don't buy it.

FYI: The pricing here isn't "absurd." It's the exact same prices as before!

According to the current exchange rate, a dress on the UK site listed at £40 is worth $72.67. When I check the same dress on the US site, it's listed at $80. A difference of $8. In some cases (the shoes, for instance), there's no mark-up at all - everything is simply converted according to going rate.

So you're not "getting it cheaper" if you buy it in London versus through the American website. (Well, yes, maybe you are, technically, since you're not paying a shipping fee.)

The four floors of wonderful at Oxford Circus ARE priceless, though. ;)

Well that dress would be $20 at Forever 21.

So it is kind of expensive for Americans in terms of cheap-fast-fashion.

(I know its directly converted from the site but thats not what I'm talking about here...)

And plus, with the American economy, who wants an $80 (pretty ugly) knock off?

Ha ha, I knew this would happen - Americans running a mile at the English prices! Yep, that's a fairly standard price for a Topshop dress, there's hardly a mark-up at all...

Um, hello, we all have to either fly to New York or spend as much on shipping as we do on the clothes we buy if we want something American... That is a standard Topshop price...

I believe the prices are the same with the exchange rate (which is why visitors from england could have a field day in our stores).

When I was in London last summer I was super disappointed when the only thing I could afford there was a pair of union jack boy shorts :/

I concur 2 & 3. Think of how we feel when it comes to US international shipping prices or the simple fact many of the US brands refuse international shipping!! The currency conversion is fine. Stop being bitter.

lol, just wait till the value of the dollar goes up. (not anytime soon, but it will). Be patient. The europeans won't be able to brag anymore. Or afford ridiculously priced rents in NYC.

Yeah, duh, $80 is what you pay for a topshop dress in England.

Topshop does not = affordable fast fashion. Topshop=midrange, sometimes okayish-quality fast fashion.

Get your cheap , trendy fun stuff at Primark, move on.

hahaha.
fashionista is a bunch of babies! we have been through this *every time* you complain about the supposed "mark-up" in topshop prices on your side of the atlantic. it is not a mark-up, it is straight up currency exchange.
we in britland just spend more on clothes - or on an item of clothing - than you guys tend to.
if you don't like the topshop prices then don't buy stuff there. that's life and that's the way it is.
thank you, move along please.

and need i reiterate? gap comes to the uk and keeps the prices the same but changes the $ to a £. do you think that is fair or shows any regard for the laws of currency exchange? rip off. urban outfitters does much the same.

thank your lucky stars topshop isn't doubling the price for you...

I agree with all the other commenters from the UK- the prices are only fair! How can they possibly be called absurd if they're a direct conversion of the UK prices? They can hardly lower their prices for an international market, it would be unfair to customers here. Also, Topshop charge quite reasonable delivery rates- the US sites that do ship internationally charge ridiculous amounts (more than double what Topshop do).

to all my dear UK commentators here. as a former londoner now living in the states, and earning money in dollars. back when i earned i earned in pounds 40 quid on a dress was fine. 80 dollars is too much. its purchasing power people, and 80 dollars here buys a hell of a lot more than it does there--my opportunity cost is lots higher here. but at least i am now rolling in designer denim, which is outrageously priced in the uk.
