Trendspotting: Bra Tops, Not Just For Oh Henry! Heiresses

bras as tops all over the spring 09 runway.jpgIt’s pretty evident that the 90s have made a come back - we all know about the crop tops, but now we’re seeing its big sister, the bra as top, all over the runway.

But the bra top raises a couple questions, like:

1. Is it a bra - as in, an undergarment made to wear under one’s clothes - or can it actually be considered a top? Cushnie et Ochs certainly thinks the latter, though we wonder what happens in cold rooms or in the rain.

2. Is it really ok to show not just a sliver of your midriff, like with a crop top, but the entire thing?

3. Where exactly is the line between “bra” and “bra top”? Is it in the construction / coverage / use of lace?

I’ve personally attempted this look with a structured bathing suit top, and another time with a cotton bandeau - BUT, only with high waisted pants. However, the runway’s been showing more skin than the new 90210, and, well, unless it’s hiding under a blazer, is anyone really going to have their six-pack hanging out like that? (Do regular girls even have six packs?)

So what’s the verdict: Runway or reality?

these models don't even have six packs.

I wouldn't do it, but it could be fun to show some more skin next spring.

If they want us to wear them in reality, then designers are taking the whole "you need to weigh two pounds" to a whole new level. How many girls do you know would feel comfortable to wear a bra-top out in public, without being mortified by a little pudge or love handles? On the upside, it would give some girls the extra ambition to wear pants that actually fit, to do away with muffin tops. I could see them pair over a wife beater or something....

i would never do it- it can get really trashy really fast. so about prada: i'll take a pair of snakeskin heels, a pair of those socks, one cashmere tie-back sweater and a pair of those mermaid boxers, keep the maroon cropped sweater. oh, and a burger, fries and chocolate shake to feed that poor model!

these SO remind of of the Seinfeld episode with Sue-Ellen Mishke who never wore a bra and then Elaine gave her one as a gift to be snarky and she popularized it as a top and women all over NYC were wearing them...

im 16, i have a six pack, and there is no way in hell that i would expose my whole stomach in public. do most people live in pedophile/creep free areas? im average looking and get honked at about 4 times in shorts and a tank - i can't imagine what would happen if i wore a bra top!

maybe a crop top with highwaisted jeans, though..

Bra tops can be interpreted into our real lives by layering something underneath. It can be a cami or boy tank. A step further, one could add a wide belt a shade off of the bra top.
