DIY: Birds of a Feather

e&jdiy.jpgOnce upon a time, I fell in love with a blazer. It had feathers (my very favorite trend that never runs its course), and adequately achieved a menswear-inspired look du jour - but with a feminine twist I actually wanted to pull off.

Yet as the story so often goes, the price tag on this Elizabeth & James blazer - $765 - offended my eyes, so I had to look away. Luckily, like a lot of Olsen-wear, the look was easily re-created - and with a more figure-flattering (for me, anyway) blazer and downsized, removable, plumage.

What You’ll Need:
- Feather trim, about $10/yd anywhere but Mood
- Blazer - any will do, my favorite is from H&M
- Velcro strip (black), $1 store
- optional: needle & thread

What to do:
You’ve probably figured it out by now.

Velcro + trim along hem = blazer! Sew it on if you’re looking for something more permanent, and live happily ever after.

Don't get me wrong, I love Mood, and while they DO have a cute puppy named Swatch running around, Mood's price for the exact same thing was $20/yd...

everywhere else ranged $10-15. truth.

Yours is much more flattering. In the original, I think the feathers go down too far and make the model's rear look like a lumpy emu.

Sorry, I need to ask you something that has nothing to do with this post, but I don't know where else to write it. I would love if you could tell me the name of those types of dresses that women wore in the 90s, like the one that Sandra Bullock wears in "Speed" movie, and were usually wore with big combat boots. Thank you so much!

I did this too! I used pretty blue and purple peacock feathers I ordered online. The velcro is a good touch, I just made the trim on a peice of felt and loosely stitched it onto the blazer and figured when I was tired of it I could cut it out.

brilliant idea! although, i'd suggest putting the softer side of the velcro on the jacket and sew the feathers to the rougher side. i'd worry that the rough side of the velcro might catch on certain fabrics, and you don't want to ruin the top you wear with the blazer.

Nice DIY and well done. I'm only left with one question. Why? I don't get the original or the desire to imitate it. Black chicken feathers? They look straggly when they're new- how are they going to look after even one day's wear? I picture sitting down once and getting up to find them all crunched and broken.

I love it...I would have added some feathers around the rolled up sleeves too... but you know I don't know how to edit myself I would do horribly on project runway :)

Oooo, I like. I think I might try it on a shorter jacket though. Like Guest #8 I worry that after sitting down the feathers would be all broken, and I think a shorter jacket would help prevent that.
