Explain

Do You Icon?

g w y n e t h.jpgFashionista Debate # 749

Once again, the office was in heated debate over a super important issue: Do you have a fashion icon?

As usual, Natalie’s adamant: no, decidedly not. But I wonder, how can this be possible?

Everyone should have an icon, someone to look to when you can’t figure out which socks to wear, someone to grab ideas from, someone that just makes you smile.

When the topic came up, I stared at Britt expecting an immediate, “Gwyneth Paltrow.” But she didn’t say it, so I did. To my surprise, she didn’t say “Duh” in that funny Cher Horowitz way she has. She was on the fence about the whole icon status. Sure, she writes love letters to Gwyn, but never thought about how she loves Stella and McQueen and structured blazers and white t shirts and major shoes the same way the super mom does.

And okay, so Hayley has a Holy Trinity (Kate, Jane, Brigitte) that she loves to look at and I can’t stop staring at Ezra Koenig every chance I get, but who’s in the majority?

Do you have an icon, a couple of icons, do you even know that you have an icon, or do you march to the beat of your own stylist?

Speaking of Gwyneth, why is it that Goop is still without content?

I don't have an "icon" in the traditional sense: I have a handful of extremely stylish friends that I'll look to for inspiration if I'm at a loss. I'll stand in front of the closet and think "now, if X was getting dressed, she'd put on...." and work from there.

I keep an everchanging moodboard on my computer, with pictures of people/clothes/scenes/outfits that inspire me.

That's my 'fashion icon'.

I would actually agree that Blair Waldorf has been influencing my style lately.

As I've recently entered my fourth decade alive (whoa!), I see myself admiring the really stylish older society women more. The ones who know how to rock a pair of wide leg trousers and a chanel suit jacket, with the perfect necklace. I dunno, someone with classic style. I've always been more preppy.

Kate, Carine and Charlotte Casiraghi. And I'll be the first to admit here, Ashley Olsen (even though she's younger than me).

Ezra Koenig is kind of hot, but I couldn't stop staring at Chris Tomson while at a VW show last month.

Then I think of Yves Saint Laurent and the grand dames of society...
If you can go from partying all night to tea with the gramps (without changing) you're def doing something right!!!!!!!!
