ELLE Accessories Kind of Folds

elle accessories cover.jpgOuch.

What seems like seconds after the demise of CosmoGIRL!, 02138, and Radar (though we’re not sure that last one counts), comes the news that Hachette is “suspending” publication of ELLE Accessories for at least a year, putting a handful of people out of work during that time.

Add to that all the retail lay-offs in WWD this morning, and this almost sounds like a Bloomberg version of the fashion industry.

Beginning of a trend?

If so, we worry for who’s next…

Beginning of a trend? Goodness, newspapers and magazine have been in hard times for a while now. Thus the [silly and in my opinion not accurate or inevitable or even grammatically correct] saying 'Print media is dead.'

I don't think I can really live without magazines. I mean, sure, it's good to read online, but nothing is like that pleasure of i-D landing on your doorstep...

Isn't 02138 just a alumni magazine for harvard? Not sure you're getting your facts right there...

no, 02138 was a regular magazine sold at newsstands, published by an independent company. it wasn't even affiliated to the actual school, it was just very harvard-centric.

It's going to get much much worse for fashion/retail. Give it a few more months. Contrary to what is often implied on this blog, the biggest fashion consumers are not fashionistas, but people who make real money and don't shop sample sales--who suddenly find themselves out of a job.
