Dissecting Gwyneth's GOOP

gwyneth GOOP 5.jpgWaiting for us in our Inbox yesterday, was a gem from the mind of our girl crush Gwyneth Paltrow. Like we told you, G has alot of stuff to tell us about life and shares it in the form of a sporadic newsletter (i.e. whenever she wants). This time, the topic was GET, her generic term for shopping and fashion, and that should tell you a lot.

1. Before she had children, she had an hour in the morning to “stand in front of my closet and try to figure out what to wear”. Seriously? The woman filmed a movie a minute, and managed, but now that she has two children and two nannies, and makes a sporadic movie (i.e. whenever she wants), she can’t find the time?

2. House slippers? I get it, you’re running around with your kids, but in slippers? How about those cute Repetto flats you reccomend a few scrolls down?

3. She references wearing a uniform in high school. This is significant because she rarely alludes to her days at Spence, and all I keep thinking is she must have been a Serena.

(cont’d..)

4. Could she be any cuter? And if you squint your eyes, you see Kate Lanphear, our other girl crush, which makes it even more fun. Plus she namechecks grey tanks, Margiela, platform boots, studded things, and a neutral pallette - Lanphear-isms, all.

5. The Juicy jacket. Really? This is gratuitous, when we know she wears the Balenciaga version. You already put in the Margiela jacket Gwyn, go for it.

6. Do you really like the Tod’s stuff? Or is this paid for by Diego Della Valle? She also mentions Vivier, another Tod’s brand, so call us conspiricists, but someone has to pay for the photographer, graphic designer, and everyone else that makes the site possible.

7. But what we really want to know is, can you recommend a tank from The Row (we’re guessing at least $250) and the same tank from American Apparel (definitely under $25) with a clean conscience? And open-toe boots? Can you do that with a straight face?

Its all fairly standard North London yummy mummy stuff really, I suppose she does it well though. I guess it was never gonna be as directional as a Paris Vogue editorial.

I find the whole concept of GOOP to be deeply irritating. I can get fashion advice from a thousand different fashion mags or blogs. Why should anyone care so much what Gwyneth is doing? Does anyone stand at their closet and say WWGD, unless they are a 5'9 skinny wealthy blond woman? I'm pretty sure those women can afford personal shoppers, and even they have been affected by the stock market free fall. This is the worst business model ever.

I have a freakishly complex relationship with Gwyneth Paltrow considering she never gave birth to me or ended a multiple year relationship with me over the phone, but I obviously subscribe to GOOP and I thought this one was typical Gwyneth: acting like she is totally normal when we have seen her in nothing but 1k heels and ten-inch long black minis for a year. Also, she totally name-checks Spence ALL the time are you kidding? Still love her, and the Batali PBS show, AND last week's GOOP about London, though! (See what I mean about the complex feelings?)

I think the open toe boots aren't so bad. They could be adorable with tights. And that Tod's coat is fab.

I am also subscribing and I thought that her layering techniques were cute, but again, as the mother of a toddler, I certainly don't have her long lean body. I am 5'5 and curvy and no matter how you slice it, the legginging or denim leggings are never going to be flattering on me, as will the sweater dress.
did anyone else notice how much she name checks Uniqglo? I mean seriously their stuff is not made that well. Who is doing her market work?

What in the world does 'Nourish your inner aspect' (GOOP's strapline) mean? Your inner aspect of WHAT?
And in the email, she said clothes used to 'bemuse' her. Seriously? Does she know what bemused means? In other words, 'I spent a lot of time looking at fashion, reading about fashion, and generally being bewildered by fashion'. Oh God... these open toe boots... they just confuse me so much...

I have no problem with Gwyneth, but I have never understood all the hype. She has always struck me as incredibly bland, in looks and personality. Yes she's tall and thin, her face is nice, but there is nothing striking there. And these outfits are the same, nice, fine, but safe and easy, not something that I couldn't figure out myself.

You should never hang a cashmere sweater (or any other knit).

They are to be folded, damnit.

That Tod's trench is bananas (as Rachel Zoe would say) compared to the Juicy one. It's a tired shape, I could get something just like it at Marshall's for a lot less money.

Fashionista, I don't get your astonishment regarding the house slippers comment. She's probably wearing them when she's--guess what--puttering around her house. Gwyneth strikes me as the "no shoes in the house" sort of woman, hence the necessity of house slippers.

Guest at 11:02AM, I totally understand what you mean about those complex feelings. I have myself! I love for for at least trying to be down-to-earth and helpful and her life does seem so inspiring and cool, but then again the woman has lived in a rarefied world her entire life and it's moments such as these when the gap between her and me is made so abundantly clear.

I love Gwyneth Paltrow! I don't think any of the stuff is that creative or anything but I like it and she looks great.

why do i need her to telling whats hot and how to wear it...she comes off as so humble and down to earth and well-bred, someone you could sit down and have a fun conversation with and then she goes and comes out with this...i am completely turned off and i definitely don't need another fashion advice site full of clothes i will not be able to afford in this lifetime. i know that a lot of actresses love to play with fashion and they have designers on speed-dial, but can't they just enjoy it for themselves instead of trying to be our fashion gurus...at least she hasn't come out with a clothing line...yet...

it's so typical, as so many pointed out before, it's nice, safe, and a bit boring. like gwyneth. you can't hate it/her, because it really is so normal and bland and hence kinda cool, but, well, it's not new at all. it's like advising every girl to purchase a little black dress. duh.

shes not needed. boring. we've seen it like 1000 times. shes also full of herself, sharing her innermost thoughts. this speaking to the common people has to stop. shes proberly warming up to a line for kmart? if were talking fashion, id rather see it on an actress whose like 5ft 3 like i am. when you are 5ft 10 like ms.gwen, anything looks fabulous. anyway we all know tods pays for this etc.
