Rachel Zoe, Spotted..?

Oct 10, 2008 @ 10:16am

rachel zoe grafitti small.jpgLocation: 19th and 10th.

The situation: A High School Musical street poster, plastered in Rachel Zoe heads.

Tagline: The rest of that reads, "Drugs at Work".

Our Reaction: Mixed. This undeniably made us crack up on the street (especially since, without any labels, we knew it was Zoe instantly), but why is everyone so incredibly mean to this woman?

Your Reaction: (fill in the blank..)

not sure why, exactly, but I like The Zoe(han) -- she doesn't seem so bad, really, and I kind of just dig her fucked-upness -- be well, RZ -- GH

Hey I have worked with rachel zoe on a fashion show before and she was a sweetheart. I really for the life of me do not get why perez, nymag etc. People are so mean to her, she's not ugly and she's not mean. I think people are just jealous because she's successful. it's really upsetting that people won't leave her alone but whatever.

I also don't understand why people are mean to Rachel Zoe. I think she is so funny and I love how she goes crazy over clothes. And I secretly love her little wrinkles- it's refreshing to see someone in the fashion industry (who also lives in Hollywood) not give in to getting botox. I love her show too!

@ first - i was participating in grouphate because anna doesn't really care 4 zoe. but i appreciate her "red carpet moments" & her knack for vintage - she's certainly not bad enough 2 deface such a suave poster of corbin bleu. lol.

yes, my reactions to her are: incredibly like-able, like your hare-brained bff, definitely not selling people drugs, probably does have her own issues with food, but who doesn't? And probably doesn't contribute anymore than anyone else in fashion to the pressure to be tiny (she's not really that much thinner than anna, meredith, kate l, and most french voguettes).

She is such a farce for every thing about fashion that is the most vapid and surface. If I hear her say, "I die" one more time I might shove a wire hanger through my eye.

I agree with all of you, execpt 6, she seems sweet and I think that she is genuinely passionate about fashion. You wouldn't hear her say "I die" if you didn't watch the show silly. And so what her face droops a little, shes human.

I agree. Rachel Zoe's fantastic and is amazing at what she does. Okay she can be a bit too dramatic sometimes but who isn't? I love her style and even more that she's her own person and really lives for the industry. She's influencial and it's for a reason. She's fab. Her assitant Taylor on the other hand? Bring on the hate.

Thanks #6...she is so vapid and her knowledge of fashion dates to like 1996...she doesn't understand the business, doesn't know the history, and isn't capable of getting the references. Sure, designers like Proenza have so many that it's virtually impossible to know them all, and that's part of the appeal, but I want someone educated disseminating fashion, not a fembot that spits out catchphrases. I admire vogue for hiring educated women (and men) like Sylvana, Meredith, Lawren, and Andre to discuss fashion.

There is A LOT more to fashion than dressing celebs for the red carpet, and it's sad she doesn't get that. Her experience is limited to the InStyle quotient.

she does what she has to to pay the bills and more importantly, enjoys what she does (how many people can say that about their jobs?). her business happens to be celebrity driven and a bit overexposed, which probably brings her down a notch in some people's books compared to those doing avant-garde spreads or who intellectualize fashion.

I think editorial work is V V different from celeb styling...editorials tell a story and some cases have influences in art, history, literature, etc. If you've read "In Vogue," their coffee table book, they describe a shoot that was ultimately redone (the one that was published was vodianova in romanticism-inspired Rochas in 05) that was based on a really obscure art reference. The scenery was meticulously re-created on a set and it was amazing, sadly Anna canceled it.

On the other hand, Zoe just creates an illusion of style for those who have none, can pay for it, don't have time to cultivate their own, or all of the above. Jen Garner in ODLR...yawn. Not saying that fashion is polarized between highly esoteric shoots and really commercial stuff, I just think her business is one of the least important aspects of fashion.

And how hubristic for her to say she wields more power than Anna Wintour.

maybe because she acts 16 going on 25, but really in her late 40s? and not to mention her vocabulary: "rodge" "tay tay" "oh em gee" "i die" "like i mean, c'mon"

shes not an olsen and i think the day she realizes that, she'll get respect. plus maybe that little comment about anna didnt help...who knows

I would have to say that the people who dislike Rachel on this thread are hardly jealous, like many poster's are saying. I believe that they are trashing her because she goes to Michael Kors, picks out a slim fitting evening gown that has been seen 5,000 time, and thinks she is a life changer. After dressing a client, on her new TV show, heavenly music starts playing, and she breaks down as if she just found a cure for aids. Fashion is a lot more complicated than placing a celebrity in an okay dress and pushing them off to a movie premier. There is probably a reason why magazines like V aren't filled with Michael Kors gowns, anyway.
On the subject of her personality, I find it strange that people are praising this immature woman who has the vocabulary of a valley girl from the late 90s, and clearly thinks that the world revolves around her.

She wields more power (at least viewership power) because she dresses people that are very much in the public eye. Anyone with a TV or an internet connection can see her work. You can't say that about Anna, to see her work, you have to pay AT LEAST $5.00 and flip through the same Trentini editorial spread each month.

Rachel Zoe is bringing back the concept of style for the masses. There is evidence that people get their style more from celebrities (either on the internet or in cheaper, tabloid magazines) than from less accessible fashion magazines like Vogue.

I think it's great that she's become such a cultural phenomenon, she has a really iconic look that is parodied just like we see in the picture above. There's a reason why people are talking about her and as long as they continue to, she's going to disappear anytime soon.

As for Taylor: I have never seen a more disrespectful people in my life, much less on TV. I would never speak like that to my boss, no matter how close I became with them. It's unacceptable. I hate to think how she speaks to people she's really familiar with like her parents and friends.

rachel should not be compared to wintour or roitfeld. she has her own career and she is extremely talented at what she does. leave the seriousness and neutral palettes for vogue. i also don't mind her sillyness, i think that is what makes her so likable and easy going. would you ever see anna crack a laugh or a nickname? i don't think so.

so zoe darling, if you are reading, i think you are fabulous! please do not ever change! you are gorgeous the way you are, no botox required! (but a slice of a chocolate torte wouldn't be a terrible thing)

don't be ridiculous. and clearly she doesn't represent everything that people hate about fashion when she is fashion herself. and so what if she's from jersey i didnt know that that was such a problem.

34 where are you getting this info? Editorial most certainly does pay if you are a legitimate FASHION EDITOR and on a masthead. I would much rather do something creative than stuff Debra Messing (aka washed up, pushing forties, actresses) into gross gowns and some Louboutins.

also, r/e her name change, it's sad that someone thinks they need to change their name and jewish identity to become successful. Sylvana Soto-Ward didn't de-ethnicize her name to work at Vogue. But for some reason, Rachel and Ralph Lauren (or should I say Lifschitz?) legally changed their names to sell themselves.

It all depends who you work for #34!!
Rachel Zoe used to work for Conde Nast or Hearst...those publishing houses pay. (None of my checks bounced for editorial work.)No, you may not be able to run aout and buy a condo, but you can afford to eat well.

If you do publishing work for V, Flaunt, etc...don't expect to be paid.

Most artist reps & editors I speak to watch this show as a guilty pleasure an think she's a joke, and the show of hers is just trash....and let's not talk about her irrelevant clients!

Wow #24. You must feel really good about yourself to make an anonymous post calling a woman a "twat." And let's hate on New Jersey because that's original. And is there a problem with her original last name or are you just hating on Jews too?

Zoe is someone from behind the scenes who is ripped apart for becoming famous in her own right. After seeing her show and her sensitivity to people like Nicole Richie calling her a raisin face, I like her even more.

On a side note, does anyone remember what Richie looked like before Zoe? Forget her body, I'm talking about the absolute lack of style. She and many others have gotten so much publicity because of Zoe's passion. What's not to like about that. And as someone mentioned above, who doesn't have food issues. If she is anorexic or whatever, maybe some compassion is in order. It's a disease.

Yeah I must say, those who hate a person that has shown no evil are jealous, whether u want to admit it to yourselves or not. She has not done anything to hurt people and just because her mannerisms annoy u doesn't give u room to talk trash - if she annoys u, don't watch, duh. As for post 22, just because she shows a different perception of fashion does not give u room to trash her as a person. Fashion is like art, there is great variety and not one entity (ie. Vogue) has more validity than any other, its all about perception.

Like someone said, u are looking for flaws to exploit, hoping she will blow up and we can see a bad side to give relevance to those trashing her. As for the heavenly music like she found a cure for AIDS when she dresses a celeb, its called media - I'm pretty sure she did not do the editting for her TV show herself, someone else made the decision to dramatize those moments. As for her immatureness, who freakin cares for godsakes! Again I say: don't watch her if she annoys u, duh! And yes she is a dramatic person, but just because she stresses out in her life does not give me the impression that she thinks the world revolves around her. Actually, I remember one episode she was reflecting on how lucky she was to make it in the business, starting out in the back of the tents and now she gets to sit front row - if she had the attitude u claim it would be more like a reflection of how great she was to make it, but I constantly see insecurity from her so she obviously doesn't think she is the greatest thing. Actually 22 sounds more like they think the world revolves around them or at least it should because Zoe's perception of fashion is totally wrong along with anybody else that likes what she does and Michael Kors is a horrible designer, even though he is well known OUTSIDE Vogue - again I see jealousy because he has made it without the help of big industry leaders like Vogue. Wake up dear, Vogue is not the "end all-be all" in fashion.
