Round Two: W vs. Vogue

vogue with drew barrymore on cover.jpgAnother message, from 10:36pm last night:

Hi Ladies,

Just got home and saw the comment madness over Blake Lively and thought I’d clear the air. I’m interning in PR for a luxury designer, and we had a request for some samples for her last week. For Vogue.

The request came for MMB’s assistant (who happens to be, strangely, Tory Burch’s step-daughter, Izzie). I don’t remember if it was for MMB’s Index or for another shoot, Izzie also handles the American market requests for any fashion shoots.

But the samples were definitely for Blake Lively and definitely sent to Vogue last week, dropped off at 4 Times Square on the 12th floor.

Night!

Then, from a friend at 12:08am:

Hi,

Blake was at 4TS not for W (which is at 750 3rd Ave), but for Vogue. She is not doing the cover, but she is doing a center of book feature styled by Katherine Neale. At least that was the editor name on the invoice for pieces that were coming in for the shoot.

Hope that settles it.

The only way everyone could be right, is if she’s on the cover of W in addition to in a spread in Vogue. In which case, Blake must have a major movie coming out.

Usually I stick to "if you don't have anything nice to say, then don't say anything at all" but I'm making an exception in this case because this debating over Lively on the cover of either W or Vogue is driving me crazy. Not so much because of which magazine she's potentially featured in but more because of Lively in and of herself: why her?! Like another one of your readers mentioned yesterday, why not Leighton Meester? She has so much more cover and editorial potential than her irritating Gossip Girl 'BFF'.

i happen to like blake and enjoy seeing her on the cover of magazines. she's a fresh face and seems very down to earth. i don't understand why we have to pit blake and leigton against one another. it's not as if leighton is not landing covers of her own. they're both talented, beautiful young actresses. if you don't like blake, then be sure not to buy the issue of w or vogue or whatever magazine she happens to grace the cover of. simple as that.

she has New York I Love You coming out Feb 13th. Is that to far away? Its not like she the star of the film though cause its a whole bunch of short films w/ some that include stars even much bigger than her and she's only in one. Maybe her role in it is different from what she usually plays so it could be an important role for her?

I would bet that it is For NY, I Love You being that magazines are put together 3-4 months in advance. Feb would fall in perfectly with that schedule. Makes sense to me.

Tory Burch's niece Izzie is MMB's assistant? Talk about connections!

That'll explain since Kathryn (crazy) did their last Vogue shoot.

Whoops I mean step-daughter, not niece.

And to think she's the same age as many of the interns there, like the ones who have been there for years (you know who you are!)

I read the intial post on Blake Lively and just realized why people don't like her. I know she is the typical blonde with big boobs. But people be honest, that doesn't discredit her acting skills. She plays her character very well. So does Leighton Meester, but I still think she is a bit overated. Its like Leighton is the underdog, that people want to love because its too easy to love Blake.

Guest #9 - I wondered if it was a split along hair color lines - blondes like Blake and brunettes like Leighton.

There aren't any fashion assistants named Izzie at Vogue, so it's either a nickname or she's Meredith's PA.

Vogue did put Britney on a cover in 2001 so I guess anyone can be a Vogue girl. AW is one of my personal heros but I feel like that magazine is becoming less and less relevant, interesting, or inspiring. The magazine feels old and her editorial staff seem a tad out of touch with the world beyond the NYC socialite scene. I hate how celebrity driven fashion is now. Models on the cover please! Let Elle stick the celebs on the cover and Vogue can put models on the cover. I just want the vogue back from my childhood that was magical, inspiring, interesting, smart, amazing, and beautiful.

Did anyone else find a strange similarity between the Elle cover with J.Lo (Oct.) and the Vogue with Reese (Nov.)? I noticed that they were very similar in a not good way for Vogue.

If Izzie is newly hired, she won't be on the masthead for a while yet - plus a couple of the editors' actual own PAs (who work for Vogue) aren't on the masthead.

Anyway, I digress.

I think the issue with Blake is that she's relatively young, and is on a tv show. Cute show and all with cute clothes, but it's not exactly ground-breaking and you wouldn't exactly put her up on the same level as Reese Witherspoon. It's like if Mischa Barton in her OC heyday was a Vogue cover girl, we'd all be acting the same way. Teen Vogue is fine, but Vogue less so. However I think W can make her look amazing if she's on their cover.

Though I agree and think it's a valid point that she gets a lot of people disliking her because it's just too easy to like her.

#10 I'm a blonde and definitely in the Team Leighton camp.

Blake's ok, but doesn't really seem worth the hype.

I'm a blonde as well and Blake annoys the hell out of me. It's not her acting skills. She just makes this one face on GG all the time whenever she's supposed to be posing or sexy. It is not sexy and no model would ever make that face.

Although I prefer Leighton, I think Both of them are attractive, in different ways. Blake's more America's sweetheart all american girl with the long blonde hair. While Leighton's look is more elegant and classically beautiful.

although the show is a influence to the fashion world, it is mostly leighton's character(Blaire) who girls try to copy. i don't like serena's clothing and to me leighton's a much better actress. also, serenas hair drives me crazy. like can she comb it...please?!

Why does everything Blake does have to be tied to Leighton and vice versa--like it's a competition? They're both great girls and Blake just happens to have more mainstream projects going on than Leighton.

I have to say though, Blake is a horrid actress, but I think she has that sparkle that will take her places.

(Leighton is the complete package, imo, and hopefully will be a household name one day, but time will tell.)

How old are those people saying Blake shouldn't be on the magazine because Leighton is not on? What's the logic there? They are two different actresses who happen to play in the same show at the moment, that's all. They have different careers to pursuit.

These comments only make Blair's (Leighton's) fans look as insecure as Blair in the show, no wonder they are fans.

I think that when it comes to either one of them being on a cover of VOGUE the comparisson just seems to natually arise, and i dont think thats wrong. It just makes sense.

They are both spectucularly beautiful and talented in totally different ways but I think that seeing leighton on the cover of Vogue would make tons more sense than blake, right now at least.
