Explain

J.Crew Needs a Lesson in Subtlety

jcrew white coco jacket.jpgWe’re pretty split on children in this office. Natalie loves them, Alexandra thinks they’re adorable and Britt thinks they’re obnoxious. We’re kind of sure Brett agrees with Britt, but he’s not here right now.

However, we all love kids’ clothes, especially J.Crew’s crewcuts collection - those kids are better dressed than most adults west of the Atlantic.

We felt the need to explain why we were browsing through the children’s section of J.Crew’s website and how we came across the $248 Ivory Tweed Coco Jacket.

We don’t feel the need to explain why we’re bringing this to your attention. But we would suggest taking note of the catalog description which oh-so-subtly admits that, “this little jacket is a nod to vintage.”

It is indeed. As well as a nod to Karl Lagerfeld and the team of couturiers who continue to produce Coco Chanel’s signature tweeds.

Tangentially, even if you’re disgustingly obsessed with your gorgeous kid, do you honestly buy them a $250 white jacket?

I was just looking at this jacket last night (the catalogue comes to my house)! I think any kid that did wear this would be really prissy and not nearly as popular as the kid who is heaps of fun and not afraid to get her jacket dirty. I personally don't know anyone who would buy this for their kids, but I bet their will be (grown up) girls wondering if they can fit into the largest size!

If you can shell out money for a $10,000 bag, a $5,000 dress, and a $1,000 pair of boots, i don't see anything wrong with a $250 children's jacket. Phillip Lim also has some sweet & expensive children's clothing that I wish I could wear.

besides a kid getting an expensive jacket dirty, what do you do when they grow out of it two months after you buy it? i hope the parents who buy it have enough offspring or at least enough extended family to pass the jacket on until IT'S vintage.

I like how Fashionista talks about the designer items they buy (even on sale, admit they're expensive!) and then question why a parent would buy their child a $250 jacket. There are a number of parents who do, esp. in New York. I'm not saying I would, but they definitely exist.

you would be surprised at the number of people who would buy this for their kids.

Incidentally, unless you're really petite, go for the XXL.
