Adventures in Copyright: Stud Me

jeffrey campbell knocked off these bess mocassins because mk wore them.jpgReader Stella’s kind of bummed that Jeffrey Campbell ripped off the Bess moccasins she’s been lusting after.

You know which ones we’re talking about - black suede with a solid rectangle of gold pyramid studs on the foot. They’re barely a bootie, with a layer of fringe around the ankle. You’ve seen them on MK and you can buy them at Oak for $222, (or you can when they re-stock).

Jeffrey Campbell didn’t want to come up with his own hipster moccasin design, so he took Bess’s and added an extra layer of fringe. But he’s still selling it for $124, and Shopbop’s still selling his over the Bess original.

No offense Stella, we think they’re both kind of ugly, (we have a hard time with a mix of fringe, suede and studs) but we totally get why you’re upset.

If it was us, we’d write a letter.

You know, I really do not feel bad for Bess at all...studs are such a DIY punk thing, and Bess charges an insane amount of money for faux punk style. It's not like Bess invented punk!

might as well stud your own. you can get the booties for $35 and the studs for $10.

and come on, most of us still have our old school bedazzler, don't we?

Nor did Bess invent the moccasin. I'm sure Minnetonka's really annoyed with all these people stealing the designs they've been selling for years. And I'm sure the native americans are like "bitches lay off our native footwear". So really, everyone's the thief here! But those shoes are really hideous.

the Bess ones are Minnetonka booties with studs. #2 had the best and most cost effective suggestion, just by some pyramid studs and DIY :)

Totally D.I.Y. A lot more affordable and can be fun with friends. Minnetonka's only cost $35 and you can design your studs whatever way you desire. Much cooler. Although I do like the Bess interpretation.

my old mocs are almost done.I'd rather replace them with a classic moc.I have to say I like the taller bootie(more of a mukluk really) but the low-rise is cute.Maybe a titch edgier. Is J.Campbell a ripperoffer? hope not cuz I just bought an ankle boot of his but honestly they're the closest thing to working for me i could find in a shoe. I don't know if it's my foot but heels seldom fit to my feet. I see models feet don't really 'fit' the shoe quite often but I put it down to samples mostly.and the heels are so high,oh my.

Is it just me or are the Jeffrey Campbell ones cuter? The diamond print instead of the square looks better as well as the second ring of studs and the second ring of fringe.

IMO the Bess ones looks kind of ratty, but maybe that is a hipster preference.
