Explain

Is Everybody Boy Crazy?

michelleboy.jpgWalking on Houston the other day, I noticed a change on the perennial Calvin Klein billboard: men. Good bye naked Eva Mendes, hello guys and girls in jeans.

Then last night on Bleecker, I spied a sparkly jacket and jeans in the window of Cynthia Rowley, for men.

Not to mention both Nicolas and Roland Mouret (re-)adding menswear to their repertoire.

And, Scott Schuman’s recent editorial in Fantastic Man features Chanel menswear.

All of this, coupled with the fact that my best friend (a girl) keep stealing my clothes, the preponderance of boyfriend jeans, and Band of Outsiders, Michael Bastian, and Thom Browne showing up in Vogue on women and men have me thinking that we’re having a manly moment.

Am I nuts, or does it seem like menswear is the new womenswear?

makes sense because menswear is not hurting as badly as the rest of the retail scene

I have definitely been noticing the same thing. Especially with how popular apparel items made for both men and women are getting, i.e. chucks and a lot of american apparel stuff. Also, I've seen a lot of other "boyfriend" clothes for girls after the Gap went through their whole pants spiel. Like the Boyfriend cardigan from J.Crew. American Eagle has one too.

I feel like I read something along these lines in Vogue every year, saying "Menswear Is The New Womenwear!!!" and it never really seems to catch wind. Maybe now it's actually happening.

oh totally. I rock my striped men's sweaters better than Jordan Catalano. and my boyfriend wishes he could get some of his slouchy cardigans back. he'll have to pry them from my cold dead hands.

Brett, you are 11752% right. It is such a huge move I almost wish I wasn't sucked into it, but I simply cannot resist. I find if I do dress like a girl (and I have noted this in others, as well), it is an 8 yr old girl, otherwise I look like a boy. Even though I namecheck this place on this site like a rapper or a member of vampire weekend, I totally think this little girl/boy look is the effect of a.p.c.!
