Explain

But How Much Will You Spend?

barneys have a hippie holiday.jpgWe’re all pretty well-versed in the recent onslaught of news regarding the economy and shopping - consumer confidence is down, sales are down, parties are down, etc.

And recently, the news has been all about how much everybody plans to spend, or not spend, this holiday season. Guess what? Polls show that most people plan to spend less, look for more sales, and, according to the National Retail Federation, almost 70% of those polled said they’ll be doing they’re holiday spending at discount stores.

But since our reaction to polls are usually more like, “How come I wasn’t polled? Were you polled? Why am I never polled for anything ever, and yet made to believe every poll I read?” So we thought we’d ask you guys for responses we know are real, especially since you’re who we talk to most about shopping, anyway.

So, what are you doing this holiday season? Are you going to spend less, more? Will you shop at Barneys, Macy’s or the dollar store? Will you spend as much as last year? More?

And here’s something else to think about: According to the Wall Street Journal yesterday, 8% of 1,000 Americans polled said they would spend more this holiday season if Obama became the President, claiming even that the election was the most decisive factor in their holiday spending, more important than even stock market news and job security - does that hold true for you, too? Or do you perhaps think polls are crap in general?

Because really, we actually do want to know.

I will definitely be spending way less. I am even considering making gifts.

I am going to be spending less than last year too Also, everyone in my family seems to be thinking the same. I do not know how many times my mom has said "it's going to be a light Christmas this year."
I think I will do most of my shopping online. There are great online deals the closer we get to Christmas. It doesn't matter how mush I spend, or how much my family and friends spend, I love Christmastime,

I buy normally but gifts for basically everyone I have ever met, but I think this year, I will still get nice things for the main 4 or 5 people in my life, and pare down my list or buy really simple trinkets for everyone else...and cut back as much as I can on the "one for you, two for me" holiday shopping attitude I usually have!

I'm spending the same as I was before (and no, I don't borrow on credit). I haven't felt the need to cut back.

I know it is terrible to admit, but I am making more than I did last year. Yet, because I know everyone else is blaming the economy and cutting back I will be as well so I can put the extra cash into savings. I need money in my mutual funds more than my friends need silly christmas gifts.

I am spending less. But most of that is because I have a great, well-paid, summer job lined up in NYC and know that I will want new summer clothes for that instead of new winter stuff to wear to the library.

As for presents, my family usually gives each other books, because we are nerdy like that. But I may be asking for Influences!

My extended family is doing a Secret Santa-type drawing this year. My friends' gifts will be coming from places like Fred Flare, which has tons of cute stuff that's easy to pick out online without having to get stressed and then overspend like I do when I shop in person. I'll probably spend about the same, maybe a little less on my immediate family.

I'll definitely be looking to spend less, mainly by paring down the list of who I buy for (immediate family & close friends only) and comparison shopping online.

i'll be spending less by focusing more on vintage fashions for friends and family - thank God for eBay!

I'm also spending way less this year. I'm going to continue to hold off until we see big changes in the market, which could take a long time. Ugh.

I am going to try to spend less but I don't like nickel and dime-ing gifts. Sometimes spending even $50 makes a big difference in what you are able to give. I would rather cut back on buying lunch and drinking lattes for the month.

I am spending the same more or less but am asking friends who are unemployed whether they want to cancel the gift exchange.

Thank god for sample sales (Prada, Hermes and Anna Sui) since that's what people will be getting from me this year!

I'll spend the same just cuz but I feel so much more optimistic now that the Obamas are in and I'm in Canada! I love to buy special things at Craft Sales and at my shop in Vancouver which is all locally made merch so I feel extra good about giving something.I'll also try to make some cards at least.I better get on it!Not so much about the discount stuff tho a sale is a sale and you gotta love that.

I'll probably spend less because I'm only planning to buy nice, personal gifts for a few people this year. My friends decided to do a brown elephant exchange, which could either be funny and creative or a huge disappointment. Either way, I'm not about to ask my friends to look for Christmas gifts while they're looking for jobs!

I don't really celebrate the holidays to begin with. I'll buy something for my sister and give my parents something as well. That's about it. I've been spending more money though lately, but on myself, because I have a great new job and I'm taking advantage of all of the amazing sales!!

My friends and I usually do a small gift exchange or bake each other yummy things.

My family (like me, sister, dad, mom) on the other hand is notorious for spending lots of money on a ridiculous amount of gifts for each other. I think this year I'm going to ask for one single big ticket item. Make it easier, and cheaper.

Distant relative usually exchange gift certificates or money for college. Yay!

I voted for Obama and I too feel better about the state of the world now that he is president elect, but let's not kid ourselves. You should be spending less now that he is in office and times are tough--he is a democrat after all.

This year I will be spending about the same on my family as i always due. But instead of giving gifts to about 10 friends, I'm going to limit it to my 5 closest ones and the rest, I'll just get them really cute cards.

I will definitely not be spending less...I will be spending as much as last year if not more and shopping in the same stores. Let's face it, anyone who's die hard about fashion would rather buy clothes than buy food, lol! So I won't let the economy slow me down! :)

I will be spending the same. I haven't lost my job and I don't anticipate that happening, so I don't have any reason to cut back spending. I will be supporting the economy by shopping as usual this holiday season.

Since I work at Bergordorf's & I've never worked during the holiday season I'll probably be more. I'm big on homemade gifts or I would use my parents' money to buy my sisters gifts but this year I'd like to give them some nice stuff esp since they're Ibankers & def hurting. Point is I'll be spending way more at Bergdorf's then I ever have... but then again, they're the ones paying me. Does that still help the economy??
