Do You Wear a Watch? The Debate

Nov 10, 2008 @ 4:17pm

sashas wearing a watch but i really doubt she wears one in real life.jpgNatalie: Have you noticed all the press watches are getting lately? I feel like I’ve seen at least three or four round-ups in the past month alone.

Brett: So..?

Natalie: But who still wears a watch? I mean, isn’t that what cell phones are for?

Brett: I wear my watch every day!

Britt: Well, I used to always wear my dad’s watch, but lately I forget to put it on in the morning.

Natalie: Because you can just check the time on your cell, right?

Britt: Right. And I’m always late anyway.

Brett: But watches are a thing. They say something about the owner, and they’re necessary.

Natalie and Britt: But they’re not.

Brett: Well yeah, but there’s something amazing about pulling up your shirt sleeve and checking your time on your watch. I mean, if someone walks up to you on the street and asks for the time [Editor’s note: Natalie swears no one ever asks her for the time, Britt and Brett say “all the time.”], it’s so much cooler to look at your watch instead of your cell phone.

Britt: But I think men should wear watches.

Natalie: But why? Why men and not women? We all have phones.

Brett: (Cuts off Britt) Because watches are to men what handbags are to women.

Natalie: Guess I missed that memo.

Britt: I just think it’s sexy when a man has a watch on.

Natalie: Missed that one, too. I think they’re from another century practically. And too heavy.

Brett: They’re about nostalgia - I think about my dad, my uncle, my parents’ friends. They’re just about tradition, the thing you always give and remember, and you wear it forever.

Britt: We should probably put this on the site..

I LOVE watches. I also don't always have my phone in reach. But the wrist, it's always there.

That and it's just like another piece of jewelry.

I think watches and handbags go hand in hand. oops, pun. Oh well.

Like no one wears watches anymore, at least that I see. It's all about the cell phones. I like them on men though, and I think the right one can look great for a women too.

I have 3 watches; one for any occasion. Even though I can't actually tell the time and none of the watches have numbers on, I'd feel lost without one on. It's an easy accessory with a big impact.

I have a very simple silver watch, not anything fancy, but I would feel absolutely lost without it. Like someone else said, I hate having to dig through my purse for my phone just when I want to know the time.

I think men should wear watches. They add a touch of sexiness to a man. You get the idea that a man is like "I'm professional, time is important, and I don't waste time". A watch can also add a touch of sophistication to a woman. I think I should start wearing one again. I feel like I doofus when someone asks me for the time and I have to dig in my purse to look at my cellphone!

I love mine but stopped wearing it when I stopped working in an office (don't know why). Now I only wear it when I'm going to be flying and can't turn on my cell phone.

I wear a men's watch everyday...I actually never take it off. I'm a big girl, almost 6 feet tall and corresponding weight, and wearing a men's watch makes my wrist feel dainty and small. Its also easier to sneak a peek at your watch when you're talking to someone than it is to pull out your cell!

i wear an oversized gold stainless steel Swatch watch that i am obsessed with...i get compliments practically every day from both men and women. i bought it well over a year ago but it was just featured in last month's InStyle...which is ironic bc i bought it in the hopes to have an original piece that i wouldnt see on every other girl and her mother. i think watches say a lot about a person - they are timeless and sophisticated.

I have a movado and I can't really even tell time with it. Watches are just an extra accessory that are a little bit functional (I use my cell phone, too). I think they are nice but I don't wear one everyday.

I have so many watches, I'm somewhat of a collector. My favorite is a gold Cartier Tank made in the same year I was born. I purchased it as a graduation gift to myself. I also have a Hugo Boss watch that is anchored on silk cord that wraps around my wrist several time. I also have an automatic men's Swiss Army that is pretty chunky. I wear them probably four days out of the week.

I have a men's swatch watch, and I get compliments on it from everyone, a lot from guys. I think it impresses them to see a relatively petite woman with a huge mens watch.
I also bought it cause I was tired of not being able to check the time during exams and such, and like many others have said, it's far quicker to check time on your wrist then hunt down cellphones, plus I think it just gives a person a more sophisticated air to them.
It's funny there's a post about watches, I was just debating getting another, smaller watch... hmm.

Since I had to wear a watch (before the age of the cell phone), I have a habit of looking at my wrist for the time. Hence, I still do wear a watch everyday and if I forget to, I still look at my wrist for the time and say "Doh~!"

I don't like to wear watches personally, but I love them on men. I tried to wear one, but it is uncomfortable on my wrist. I don't wear a lot of jewelry anyway, so that's probably why I'm not a big fan...

I stop wearing mine when it broke because it was a really cheap one, I would consider wearing one again but it has to be a really good one which means a really expensive one.

My dad absolutely adores watches, so I think it quickly rubbed off on me. I love them, and I love a big mannish one on a woman. I turned 21 recently and requested a great ESQ watch from the parents for my birthday. I like the timeless of a watch (pardon the pun).

I always wear a watch and feel completely lost when I forget to put it on. I echo what others said that it's so much easier than digging around for my phone (especially when I'm running late).

The one I've been wearing lately is silver and gold, which I like because it goes with most of my jewelry.

Right now I'm looking for a gold-tone menswear watch.
I've really been wanting to borrow my dad's Rolex on a semi-permanent basis because he never wears it; I have yet to work of the courage to ask him, though.

I wear my dads cartier gold tank watch, which he's had since he was 15 and doesn't use anymore because its the womens style which he said was trendy at the time. I definitely plan on passing it on to my daughter when the day comes too.
Other than that I love hearing people's stories behind their watches, guy or girl. Though my dad has the most beautifully organized watch collection ranging from panerai to rolex and so on and so forth. He keeps them in a wooden box and has specific watches for specific shirts (according to thickness of the face which designates which shirt he can wear which each one). But it's true his watch collection is what I see my handbag collection being one day.

Oh gosh, I wear vintage watches all the time but just for the look. They don't even function...the batteries have died long ago!

I do wonder what I'll say on the inevitable day someone asks me for the time. Perhaps I'll just whip out my cell?

I NEVER take my watch off. I wear it in bed, in the shower, in the pool, doing dishes... I only really take it off when I'm going to the beach. It's part of my arm, basically, I feel super naked without it, plus I have the tan line.

What I love about watches is that even if you wear a little, feminized one with its hands barely visible it still shows the time so much better than any other bracelet.
Though, even if wearing a watch, I check time on my cell.

wood accessories are my favorite. the wood watch was an upgrade from my old fossil-like silver with royal blue watch, which i used to get compliments on all the time.

it's just like a piece of jewelry. does your necklace or bracelet serve a purpose? even if the battery of your watch is broken it's just like any other piece of jewelry, an expression of yourself.

I wear men's style watches. I love the overt masculinity on a woman's delicate wrist. And men wearing watches? So sexy. But they are an elegant accessory and phones...well, aren't.

P.S.- Do you guys carry around recorders all day to catch these conversations...?

When I drove to work, I never wore a watch. But now that I'm always catching trains, I never leave the house without one.

I favor big, bold (traditionally men's) watches, and the one I have right now is a navy blue number from Toy Watch.

I agree with how Pretty Young Thing put it. The accessories of traditional menswear have a quality and power allure that, for me, most women's accessories lack.
