Economy Hits Marc Jacobs

marc jacobs dressed as camel toe.jpgWow - first, media giant Conde Nast suspends Fashion Rocks and Movie Rocks, and downsizes Men’s Vogue, and now Marc Jacobs has to cancel his holiday party.

The annual bash, which is more over-the-top than a Bollywood extravaganza, is usually at the Rainbow Room, which we guess was just too much money to swallow considering Robert Duffy said the cancellation was, “due to the financial climate”.

The news comes just a couple weeks after Hearst’s own announcement of no holiday party plans, though you have to figure - if companies like Hearst don’t have the cash, and designers like Marc can’t pull in the sponsors, what kind of situation is everybody else in?

We know these are just holiday parties, and of course everybody wants to avoid the photographic evidence of major AIG-style bashes during what is a tough time for most, but it really says a lot when even the major companies cut back in major ways.

Guess we’ll never know what Marc’s costume for his Rock and Roll Circus theme (which, oddly, was announced less than a month ago), would have been - we were hoping Mick.

they have the cash, and now they have an excuse to NOT spend it (it's now considered 'insensitive' and tacky to throw extravagant events, given the economic situations).

I will miss not seeing the photos the day after. It must have been hard for Robert to cancel the party. His employees all seem to love and look forward to it. The people in their stores are the cutest/happiest/nicest bunch of people in retail so hopefully they'll get a bonus or something else to make up for no party.

I wonder how spring orders went.

I think that its wise in this economy to throw a absolutely lavished party, but I also feel they have done tremendously this year from collections to second line that it seemed so well deserved, with the recent events of today lets hope the best for the future!

This is complete bull. That company has SO much dough, it's crazy. They fly their employees everywhere for store openings and throw lavish parties for Duffy and Co.. I think this is their excuse to be cheap and totally pimp those people that deserve the party.

What people perhaps aren’t thinking about is that there are literally hundreds of New York entertainers/managers who were relying on income from Marc Jacobs this December and now are worrying about how to pay their bills because a month before the event they decide to cancel it. So, while it's understandable to protect your image in an ailing economy, it totally screws NYC entertainers over BIG TIME.
Marc Jacobs' holiday party is a big source of support, income, and expression for artists that is going to be very sorely missed this year. This isn't lavish for us, it's our livelihood.
