Fly JetBlue, Get Free Mascara…

maybelline great lash mascara on jet blue so weird.jpgFriday night, I was on a JetBlue flight to Fort Lauderdale, headed to Key West for a friend’s wedding.

About half way into my Munch Mix and Coke, one of the flight attendants handed me a tube of Maybelline’s Great Lash. I said, “What’s this?” He said, “A gift” and continued to hand out mascara to all the female passengers.

I’m not Great Lash’s greatest fan, but it was free, so thank you. But here’s what’s weird:

The flight attendants never came around with any gifts for the males, and I kept wondering to myself, “But what about the cross-dressers? The guys who wear mascara anyway? The 13-year old girls who probably wear Great Lash but don’t get the free tubes from the flight attendants who think they’re too young? And, the fact that this is really kind of sexist?”

Such was my Friday night. And I still haven’t opened the mascara.

Thats pretty cool! I wish all airlines passed out free makeup during the flight. I don't really think it's sexist- how can free mascara be bad?

I don't really think its sexist. If someone wants it they could always ask for it and I'm sure the flight attendant would give them one. I think it's pretty cool.

its not sexist

its probably just a promotion. the company is targeting certain people. free mascara ---> brand loyalty and hopefully the customer buying their brand later on. They are just giving it to their target audience.

i don't think it's sexist either. if i was a guy, i'd be kind of offended if someone offered me mascara.

i flew jetblue last week and they were handing out a whitening toothpaste as the promotion...so maybe they change up the promotion for different flights anyway.

but yeah def would have preferred mascara :)

I don't think it's sexists. .. but if I were a dude, I'd definitely be wondering where my freebie were. I am however a girl and I would be elated to receive free mascara. Especially Maybelline (it's the best).

Gender normative, yeah. Sexist, not any more than all advertising is sexist.

What about all the girls whose brothers/buddies/boyfriends/etc were on that plane and are consequently missing out on free mascara? Think of them!

good point #5, what about the boy they give it to because they thought she was a girl?

i think it's a nice gesture but they need products that won't offend anybody and possibly lead to negative publicity.

It's funny, Maybelline and Jet Blue could have avoided the question of sexism and actually scored some major points by just offering the mascara to *everyone* old enough to be flying by themselves.

No assumptions, just give everyone the opportunity to snag the freebie. Free mascara and a hit against gender norms at the same time. Sounds like a win-win.

some big whig probably thought that this was the smartest idea since advertising on television.
news fash: it isn't.

but i do love that mascara, it's like the go-to fall back between all the fads

maybe they were handing out the mascara to their 'target audience'?

i'm going to assume though cross-dressers sure do love their Great Lash mascara, they're probably a minority?

Funny! I was at the airport in Las Vegas waiting to fly home and having a drink in the bar. The guy who sat next to me gave me the mascara and said he got it from JetBlue and I thought he might be trying to poison me or something. Hahaha. Glad to know I can finally open it up ;)

i'm sure if the freebie was cream for jock itch it wouldn't be considered sexist if the ladies were left out...
