i totally agree. ever since i was little and started becoming obsessed with fashion, models, and celebrities and their beauty, my mother always said "put 10 lbs of makeup on me, adjust the lighting, and i'd also look like that." mommy happens to be beautiful to begin with, make-up or no make-up, but her statement always helped me keep my self-esteem and the reality of fashion/beauty/celebrity in check.

Well, that's the thing, modeling isn't about being your every day pretty girl. It's about being photogenic, and unique and being able to transform and bring something different to the table every time.

I was reading an article on how to look good having your picture taken, and it noted something about how some models don't look so great in person. It's the way the light hits their facial structure that makes them look so much better in pictures (and a great makeup job). Hence the test shots. That is why when you see them in person, they may look quite ordinary.

Another thing that affects to look of the model's first pictures is the shape of the lens.
Notice how everyone's jaw looks so much stronger in the show shots? the lenses of Polaroids have a tendency to amplify the objects closest and de-emphasize that which is further away, so on pictures like those above, the face gets distorted. An image of a model without make-up is not more true to life if something else is distorting her image.
You can often see this on pictures people post of themselves on sites such as MySpace. Noses often look larger than in real life because digi point and shoots also favor the nearness of things.
Photography is not truth.

Chanel looks gorgeous. But the others...holy crap. Especially Maria Carla.
It is all about the lighting. Lighting alone can work miracles; if you need evidence, pick up the copy of People's "Stars without Makeup," and compare the pictures in there with paparazzi shots. Waaaayyyyyy different.

If we took the total population and took polaroids of everyone just after they woke up early in the morning, I can guarantee these models would look pretty good in comparison. Everyone can't pile on 10 lbs. of makeup and look good, either. A certain bone structure is needed to carry off makeup well and models have to have that to be successful. This is a really cool feature though. NY Look is pretty much my favorite biannual fashion mag.

Have some mercy! The polaroids were taken at the gucci show, at least two weeks and half into fashion week. How hot would you look if you were walking a million shows every day and having barely any time to sleep (let's not even talk about getting over jet lag)!

Living in NYC you run into models with some frequency on the streets when they're not all made up, but just looking natural and casual and believe me you'd think they should be models, even if you didn't know they were already.
It's hard to tell from polas but the bone structure, facial angles, etc that you need to be a model are very evident. They don't look like your pretty girl next door. Sometimes they really aren't even that pretty, but there's a unique quality about their aesthetic that makes them stand out.

they all look very hideous when they dont have makeup on. lily looks like a very very hideous person. and in her gap ads, she looks so weird. i think that she is taking thin to the extreme. her face looks so weird and in that ad when she is smiling her cheeks are so wrinkly and her skin looks so dry and yuck. and chanel is pimply. maria looks like a tranny, and whats her face looks like a very anorexic man.

would it be terribly wrong of me to say that some of those models are completely hit up in their natural state? what a difference 10 lbs of eyeliner makes. almost makes me feel as if i could be a model (although i'm plenty sure i can't) with those girls lookin like that.
