Reese’s Pieces

reese witherspoon wears cartier to post with vince vaughn.jpgThis morning before catching the train, we did a double take when we saw a poster for the new Reese Witherspoon vehicle: Four Christmases. We weren’t marveling at her super-shiny hair, nor were we reminiscing about how cute Vince Vaughn once was, no, what caught our eye was the shiny glint of a Cartier Love bracelet on Reese’s wrist. All we could think was, “Are you kidding?”

But now we’re thinking, maybe you know what brought this on. Pop quiz!

a. Does Reese’s character, Kate, just have a thing for Cartier? She’s also wearing a Tank, which is the present of choice for graduations and milestones.

b. Is this an ad for Cartier, like product placement paid for by the jeweler as a subtle nod to all the people who would love to say they share her taste (especially in platinum with diamonds)?

c. Is this just good art direction, like when Louboutins show up in cold medicine commercials because the soles are so pretty? (ps she may be wearing said shoes here.)

Pencils!

I don't know about anyone else but I definitely didn't get a Cartier watch for graduation. I thought Tiffany was the graduation gift of choice.

I know movies are 99% fake but maybe its a gift from Jake and she's sticking by the "it's locked on until he takes it off" situation. You never know...

well, to keep this cartier trend going...the red bow tying them together is very Christmas, but it's also super reminiscent of Cartier building's Christmas decoration in NYC when the building is tied up in giant red bows!

She's definitely wearing the Cartier Roadster and not a Tank.

Every single thing on that poster has been decided by the art directors. Actors don't even keep wedding rings on on set, etc. So it's part of the character, which in romantic comedies often commonly includes some fantasy of aspirational taste as in affording a 3K watch.

either way it is hilarious that you think it's a common grad present. Mine was college, thank you. And maybe a laptop. oh, how delusional the rich...

She looks great in that picture.
But to answer your question,it's statement B; total product placement on the part of Cartier. It's a Christmas date movie, after all. What better gift for your special love than a Cartier Love bracelet (and corresponding tank watch)?

Nothing in advertising is ever an accident.

It's a tasteful product placement at least :)
