The New Sale Mindset: What Does it Take for You?

barneys sale email alert from yesterday.jpgYesterday, when I heard that Scoop was having a 25% off sale on shoes and handbags through Tuesday, I literally scoffed. I thought, “25%? Lame.” And that’s when I knew my sale perspective has changed.

I used to think 25% was decent. You get to cut the price in half, then in half again to know how much you save. But with all the mega sales these days, 25% kind of sounds like kids’ play. Even though just a few months ago, I might have canceled plans to make it to a 40%-off sale, these days, I’m pretty much unmoved unless the magic “75%” is dropped.

Britt says she’s unmoved by sales now, too, unless they’re offering 95% off (translation: she’s not even shopping the sales right now) - though, she does say if it’s Vivienne, McQueen or Stella on the block, 35% off is the minimum she needs to hear to ensure attendance. Hayley says she needs to hear at least 80% off now, and Alex says she always only shopped deeply discounted sales anyway, and I’m sure you all know Linda Evangelista’s definitely a no-show unless she can somehow make ten grand off the cameo.

Do you find your sales perspective has changed? Or are you just showing up to anything and everything?

Even though the economy is TERRIBLE I try to buy what I want when I see it - IF I can afford it. I buy alot at Mayle full price, so it was nice to go to the store and snag some of the "maybe" items for 40% off. I got several things - and even though stuff i bought full price was there - i felt better knowing that i had already bought it just in case i missed it. that said I did get a GREAT Nanette dress at Lord +Taylor for $93 down from 305, which is a better bargain than her sample sale. I think retail is going to see boost next friday - b/c with things on CRAZY sale people are still going to shop. Its embarrasing to say, but I am definatly patronizing the stores with special offers + coupons next week, i mean good designer stuff at L+T and Bloomies is going to be a bargain.

Just this week, i scored some amazing bargains - Martine Sitbon tote at $139 or 70% off at Shopbop, and then at sample sales - Yigal python clutch for $50, and QI cashmere sweater dress for $10. I think 70-80 percent off, or wholesale price and below are when I start to get excited. Screw the department stores - waaay too overpriced for me even with the coupons

I'm only going to sample sales for designers that I know I like and it has to be at least 50% off and something I'd die to have anyway.

I was always cheap but I find others are finally getting with the program. I hope this is a permanent shift - meaning that retailers will have to work harder to earn consumers' money. In addition to 95% off I want a better overall experience. Let's force these b____ to adapt to the new consumer

This is hopefully only temporary. If consumer's are not willing to pay for the product and merchants continue to have to sell goods at a 75% markdown, they make less money, which in the long run is not pretty. This means in order to start making money again, they are going to lower the cost of production. So yes, the big sales are great for now... but just wait till everything turns to PVC!

agree with number 6...even at wholesale prives, a designer is just covering their costs, which means you can say goodbye to quality, pretty packaging, and helpful salespeople.

wtf @ #4. In addition to 95% off (!) you want a better overall experience?! Most stores break even on the garments wholesale cost at 50% off. That is not even including their cost of doing business (rent, employees, advertising). 95% off is completely unreasonable to expect. If you are getting that discount, I can guarantee that your overall experience will be much worse because the store can not afford to provide you with one.

I understand that times are tough and people are less willing to pay full price for clothing, but if everyone continues to have this attitude, the best independent stores will go out of business. Yes, Barneys and Saks will probably be fine and can absorb huge markdowns, but what about stores like Bird and Jumelle? Small boutiques are my favorite shopping experiences, and I do not want to drive them out of business.

Please remember that, for the most part, stores do not set the price of their merchandise -- it is the designer who does.

After working in retail and seeing the 220% mark up, it's hard to get excited about any sales that don't get close to the original whole sale price.

Dear #8

As the writer of the #4 post, I do agree with you, except you missed my joke!
Of course I don't want small store to go bankrupt, but regular prices at stores are still marked up

I want more sales from big retailers

-by the way the demand for 95% off was a joke.. but it would be fabulous none the less!

What fashion needs to do is to DROP prices across the board.

EVERYTHING is so expensive these days it's outrageous!

Other than Mayle, which I got at 40% off because I love them and they are closing down, I'm not interested until I see 60-70% off or more,

I hate shopping, my size is never/rarely available at big sales, and I cannot deal with the chaos that goes along with major sales. Therefore, I trained myself to only shop at the beginning of the season. I allow myself two days. During those two days I hit 4 or 5 stores. I do my homework and know what I want or would like from each store.

It's the only way I can justify spending full price on my clothes and shoes. The items I purchase are small in number. Each item is very special, beautiful, and interesting. Thus far it is working out well. Now I have a closet of perfectly selected pieces instead of an a clothes overflowing with fillers.

all i know is that i think pre-sales are the dumbest thing ever. i came into the store, dug around through piles of merchandise, plucked from the chaos one shining article of clothing that actually fit, you swiped my credit card and i signed for it, and then you hung my precious purchase in a little snowflake bag, smiled smugly, and told me i could come back tuesday. what the f. i just want my dress.

Bluefly.com should be going out of business soon. They can't keep offering 20% off of 3 year old merchandise in this market.

@ 11- I totally agree. prices recently have skyrocketed, for everything. 4 years ago 100$ jeans were suprising, now $200 dollars is around average. What ever happened to 40$ jeans??
It's just ridiculous how much the prices of everything have inflated.

Oh no guest 16, I saw a Priorities jacket on sale at Bluefly for $90. . . meanwhile Anthropologie had that very same jacket for $188. Bluefly can be good but you have to look carefully.

^^^sure, but most the time bluefly just marks up the "msrp" way higher than it ever was and then gives 20 or 30% off this inflated price. lame.
