Nobody can stop talking about the December Vogue cover with Jennifer Aniston. Some are fixated by the Photoshopping, but most are shockingly interested in Jennifer calling out Angelina on stealing her husband back in 2005 and now semi-gloating about it.
But our reaction went more like this: Since when does Vogue put up cover lines, like the one at left, like they’re Us Weekly?
“What Angelina Did Was Very Uncool” sounds like something I might glimpse on the cover of somebody’s trash mag while on a neighboring treadmill, not what America’s leading fashion magazine should use to sell their issue.
We get that cover lines are all about grabbing the newsstand browser, and that anything about Angelina obviously sells, but still, forgive us for thinking there were boundaries.
Not to mention, that quote isn’t even correctly attributed to their cover girl – the extended quote reveals that she actually said something considerably different. But, we guess that doesn’t matter if you’re selling it like Star.

Desperate times call for desperate measures. Nonetheless disappointing. But Vogue hasn’t been the leader in fashion in a long time, maybe in ad sales , but that is changing as well.
Notice that ALL the fashion slugs on the cover involve either cheap clothing/gifts OR splurges that you will “wear forever.” When the fashion goes InStyle, the features do as well.
Agree, and why Jennifer A. There are a lot others more interesting celebs that haven’t get a cover.

Omg. The ridiculous cover line aside, is it not about time everyone got over the whole Brad/Angelina/Jennifer thing? I mean how long ago did it happen? I, for one, didn’t care at the time and I certainly don’t care 3 years later!

In my opinion, there are two readers of popular (like Elle or Vogue) fashion magazines:
Reader #1: is the regular woman, who probably likes to shop; but could care less about Rodarte, has an interest in “actresses” like Jennifer Aniston, and enjoys budget, realistic shopping features
Reader #2: is us, avid readers of fashion blogs who drool over studded skyscraper heels we could (probably) never afford, and would rather see supermodels on the covers of our publications
Miss Wintour is trying to get Reader #1 (who is admittedly a bigger reader base) but is in the process losing #2. There is no balance.
So while #1 is increasingly giving up magazines…
(my mom is a #1 for example, and said she hasn’t bought a magazine for months)
…#2 will always covet her Paris Vogues and iDs in print.
I’m not sure if I’m making sense, but anyway…
Vogue should get back on track as THE fashion bible, basically.
Or maybe a smart idea would be less publications, like 1 for every 2 months and more web content…
I know the only issues I buy are “the fall one” and summer ones (for beach reading).

Not to mention Vogue made a bad move by picking Jennifer (prob #2) to pose on a beach for a December issue (prob #3).
She needs to sell magazines (bad economic times call for desperate measures), you can look forward to more tabloid friendly stars in 2009…and recognizable TV stars as well. I wouldn’t be surprised if one of the Gossip Girls made it on the cover, probably Blake Lively.
Vogue pretty blatantly gave up on producing quality features a while ago. Anybody notice how their editorials all feature looks by exactly one designer? I’m betting that’s due more to ad dollars than to artistic laziness.
I think, in order to maintain its reputation as the premier US fashion mag, Vogue needs to go back to its roots. Let’s face it: the every-woman they’re catering to now
1) can get SO much more juiciness from Star, without having to deal with Vogue’s pretension, and
2) is not as INVESTED in the way Jenn’s love life turns as we are in the percolations of the fashion scene. Gossip is a dispensable indulgence. Fashion is SERIOUS BUSINESS.
So, once again, Vogue needs to refocus. We need editorials with creativity, exploration of trends that is relevant to be both fashion addicts and the less adventurous. Most of all, we need CLASS. Vogue used to embody that word and now…they kind of insult it. If, in producing these things, Vogue has to quietly decrease circulation, so be it. Once the publication regains its reader base, there’ll be more than enough money for expansion.
Also, AHHHHHHPHOTOSHOPISSOPAINFUL!!! I can’t even look at Annie Leibovitz’s stuff anymore.
I thought the EXACT same thing after seeing the cover on their website!! Personally, I would be embarrassed to be holding that issue of Vogue.
NEWSFLASH: Photoshop has become the norm. ALL the leading magazines have it on the agenda just as they have the original photoshoot scheduled. They take a natural beauty like Aniston & do uneccessary tweaks in the pursuit of our society’s idea of perfection. Such a shame.
Jen is a lovely girl just as she is & oh, btw… I’m sure she’s not happy with Vogue for taking what was a graciously minimalistic statement (all things considered) & using it to their bottom line advantage by blowing it out of proportion. It’s journalists/writers like that who give the rest of us a bad name.
Vogue should apologize to Jen for misrepresenting the context of what she actually said. As for Angie, well she knows what she did was in fact UNcool. Still though , I wish her the best for the sake of the children.

Vogue is really becoming a waste of paper. Too many celebrity covers, too many socialites. There are so many fantastic models (current and past) that are so much more relevant than Jennifer Aniston (with all due respect to her). That headline is so unbelievably low class. As for #18′s comment that she is so “old and ugly” is pretty harsh. Since when are one’s 30′s (or even 40′s) considered that old?

I actually cant wait to get the vogue. I think that the cover is terrible, however its great to see how MORE vogue can dissapoint me each month. There is nothing new or fresh or fun. its funny, i worked at elle and it wasnt my favorite magazine. But since I left i have been reading it religiously and loving it. The reason why elle is doing so well is that its a fashion magazine for every woman similar to British Vogue – its balenciaga and gap, its H&M and prada its accessible!! I am so sick of rreading about socialites – its so annoying and honestly, who cares?
Yes, lame that the pull quote is misleading AND on the cover, but more disappointing to me is that Jennifer Aniston is the cover model. What? I don’t get Vogue to read about mildly talented actresses who have movies to promote. Seriously. And I definitely could care less about Angeline/Brad/Jen.
Also (on a separate but related note), I was very disappointed Beyonce was this month’s InStyle cover model — talk about a snooze-fest of an interview… she’s so keen on being politically correct that she comes off as incredibly bland and uninteresting. To me anyway. Maybe we’ll get a good cover sometime soon…
Ew. I’m sorry but Jennifer Aniston is not relevant, ESPECIALLY to a supposed fashion magazine like Vogue. I wish Vogue was able to sacrifice some of it’s housewife market and stop using celebrities on the covers. And also, as mentioned, stop mentioning socialites. Invite back creative styling, drop some of the pretension, and be a bit more like Paris Vogue or at least like Elle. “What Angeline did was very uncool” should never, ever be on Vogue. Neither should “Holiday Romance”, at least unironically. This is a mess.

I seriously could not AGREE more with all the comments regarding Vogue heading (quickly) down a slippery slope. Talk about alienating your readers! I am BLOWN AWAY that Vogue printed that quote, and on their cover nonetheless!! What the hell are they thinking doing this….as much as I dislike Jennifer Aniston, I think they should apologize to her as well. If I were her, I would be personally horrified that that quote was next to my picture. National Enquirer, here we come!! What people want is FASHION…not some irrelevant actress! Where are the models? Seeing this cover completely validated my decision to abandon any ideas of subscribing to this now sub-par magazine. I hope someone at Vogue is reading all these comments and taking them into consideration, VOGUE needs immediate resurrection.
