Would You Wear

Would You Wear a Muff?

would you wear a muff my friend.jpgMaybe two weeks past the Christmas on which I finally got my Samantha doll, my little sister placed her delicate fur hat atop a light bulb until a hole burned through the top which left the poor doll nothing but her muff to keep warm with.

Ever since then, I’ve wanted a muff of my own - seriously.

It was a no go in California, and I kind of forgot until this morning when I saw a girl wearing one on the subway which triggered a vague memory of Andre Leon Talley wearing his on the colder days of fashion. Brett thinks they’re swell though they need to be tempered with something less sweet, and Natalie thinks they’re brilliant for iPod usage.

However, there is the issue of practicality. You can’t just stuff a muff into your purse or pockets once you get inside, and you probably can’t wear a muff with jeans and sneakers. Well, you can of course, but it’d be sort of like wearing your sequined platforms with a sweatshirt, though less rock and roll.

So before I even wonder where one acquires an open roll of vintage fur, I have to ask if you’d wear one or if the idea’s totally ridiculous.

If I find one, I’ll probably buy it and wear it regardless of your answer, but I’m wondering, would you wear a muff?

I've wanted a muff ever since I was a child and read the Samantha books...I actually wanted most of her wardrobe, if not solely for the fun of dressing up. Living in Califonia, it might not be completely necessary, but I think I'll get one anyway. (Well, actually, with my wallet in its current predicament, I'll probably end up making it myself since I already have the materials lying around.)

Reading the Samantha books totally made me want one, but now - I don't know if I would wear one, simply because it's pretty bulky.

I have a Longchamp muff and I love any excuse to wear it. Mine has a zip up pouch in the middle - just big enough for lipstick, cell, and some cash.

Get one with a zippered pocket inside-- practical AND oh so glam! And if you're anti-fur, you can certainly find/make one that's faux fur.

if you're looking for a fake fur muff, i saw them at urban outfitters. plus it has a chain to wear it around your neck so you don't have to stuff it in your pocket once you're inside.

I'm a boy, so: no!
As far as I know old women wear a muff, at least here in Austria. If I were to invest in fur I want it around my upper body. (And I want it to say "Screw you, peta"). Anyway, I don't like muffs that much.

I have a faux-fur muff and I love it! I use it every winter. It has a cord, so when I'm inside I wear it like a messenger/cross body bag. It's a relic from my childhood (I too, had Samantha), so it's small, and not bulky at all.

They are fun and fancy and functional and totally glam. Long live the muff!

sort of reminds me of Cher's project from the Clueless TV show? anyone remember when she made a bunch and sold them at school?

Re: "You can’t just stuff a muff into your purse or pockets once you get inside", I can't believe no one has designed a muff yet that doubles as a handbag. I can totally picture a standard size muff with a short, detachable chain and a pocket on the front for holding keys, wallet, lipstick.

This sounds so 21st century Chanel. Karl needs to get on that!

anyone remember Clueless the TV show when Cher was inspired by her history class to make a muff. Then all her friends wanted one too so she went into bussiness, Betsy Johnson even made a guest appearence as Chers fashion designer mentor and at the end of the show Cher and her partnered up and Betsey added them to her line!

I remember when I was little my dad's then-gf gave me a fur "set". It was a fox fur hat, stole and muff, and I wore it very often.
Anyhow, I used wear it all the time, and totally would continue had my hands not grown to their adult size. For storage, I used to stuff it into the sleeve of my coat.

yes. And this is actaully slightly embarassing, but I remember Samantha from the American Girl dolls wearing one. I was a kid at the time, but I was soo envious of how chic that looked. On a DOLL.
So, yes. I'm all for muffs. Isn't that why you tuck your hands into your sleeves anyways? It's practical and timeless.

I not only would wear a muff but I do. Although I'm a native Southern Californian (Santa Barbara) I have both a large sable muff, a vintage one of fitch and a marvelous "barrel" shaped muff of shiny black coq feathers. And during holiday season out of their boxes they come. As to wearing, after your initial entrance with hands in the muff you just slide it up the left arm and proceed as normal with glasses, dishes, conversational moving hands, whatever.

I rarely use them. In fact, I think I used one of them once a few years ago. I bought them because I'm an amateur clothing archivist and have items that date from the 40's on.
