2.55 * 2

chanel topshop aic.jpgOkay, so we know the Chanel 2.55 bag has been ripped off a thousand times on Canal Street, but we never thought a legitimate retailer would go near it.

We should’ve known better.

Topshop’s quilted cross body bag is made of 100% Polyurethane (google it, we did) yet still costs a kind of ridiculous $50. So, it must be especially well stitched, right? You’re not paying for the creative vision, because, seriously, everything from the quilting to the shape to the white and gold chain strap and the front closure screams Chanel.

It’s just two C’s short of being a flagrant rip-off.

Why would Topshop even bother copying such an iconic and recognizable design when they have a bajillion designers at their fingertips? It’s like J.Crew making a Fendi Spybag or H&M trying their hand at the Birkin.

There are some things that you just don’t mess with.

flagrant's not really the best adjective for that. did you mean blatant?

webster says:

flagrant: conspicuously offensive ; especially : so obviously inconsistent with what is right or proper as to appear to be a flouting of law or morality

sounds right to me...

who says Topshop is legit? They're just like everyone in fast fashion retailing.

These rip off chanel bags are all over the British high street so topshop are just giving the masses what they want. River Island (British high street store similar in price to topshop) have been ripping off the Chanel Tote for two seasons.

yep topshop just made their next step into being as blatant as forever 21. i mean yes the mass consumer will buy it and probally not even know about the 2.55 bag, but i agree with with what you guys are saying its still just a very bold move.

awful, yes, but at least the 2.55 is so iconic that topshop's target consumers couldn't NOT know that it's a rip-off. it was only after i started paying attention to fashion that i realized how often fast fashion takes its "inspiration" from designers. example: i had to hold my tongue last spring when a roommate bought a dress that was a $20 version of an alice & olivia...

The bag pictured from Chanel is actually our Timeless classic, not the 2.55.

They are very similar, but the Timeless features the CC lock vs. the 2.55 which has a lock similar to the one pictured on the topshop.

i just made my own body form to start my own designs and the 2, gallon buckets that are mixed together to creat polyurethane were $200! ...i understand why the purse is expensive, but I still don't think it's right in any way that they ripped it off.

Yeah, all the UK high street stores have done a 2.55. I bought the River Island version but it proved so unpopular I had to return it.

Guest 7, is that a fact? In that case I have the Timeless Classic when all along I thought I had a 2.55. How confusing!

Not to take away from the original point, but $50 for fake leather doesn't seem all that unreasonable to me. Stella and others get away with selling pleather shoes and accessories for 10 times that amount.

This has been going on forever. Back in (gulp) 1962 or so I bought an imitation Chanel quilted bag (no-name) at my local department store in Canada. All leather, fully suede lined, very durable hardware, for (I think)$30. (At the time my weekly salary was less than $50.) In those days no one thought of passing copies off as real; it was just something that was in style. I wonder how much an original would have cost then.
