Adventures in Copyright: Sad Face

adventures in dino copyright graphic.jpgJulia Schonlau is a Berlin-based artist.

She designs covers for her music friends, graphics for her skateboarder friends and t-shirts for her fashion friends. Sometimes, she designs t-shirts for Threadless - like this one.

It features a disturbing but cute dinosaur pouting over his bottom fangs because he can’t hitch a ride in one of the mini cars at his feet.

It might not be a Michaelangelo, but it’s her drawing, her design, her everything -

And Forever 21 totally ripped her off. Not like they drew a cartoon Dino “in the spirit of”, but like someone broke out the tracing paper and screen printed the image onto a different tee and called it, “a humorous retro faded Godzilla graphic print”.

And then they decided they’d charge $.90 more.

Forever 21, on behalf of Ms. Schonlau, we wish you a very unmerry Christmas.

oh my gosh!
i've heard that the forever 21 bosses (whatever they're called) are super insanely, frighteningly christian and pressure all of their underlings to convert as well.
how hypocritical. i don't think jesus would approve of this behavior at all. hahaha

This is outrageous. She should definitely sue - and she would definitely win.

I'm usually quite forgiving of the "inspired by" looks (particularly when potential customers are financial brackets apart), but this is ridiculous. I hope she successfully sues them

I disagree with the rip off but seriously folks, how many of you REALLY shop at Forever21. I remember walking in the store about 5 years ago (the Union Square store) and hasn't been back since.

People who shop at Forever21 do not shop at Saks.

This makes me furious. I *love* threadless (in fact, I even own this particular shirt), and I hate that a cheap chain store feels like they can just swoop in and take whatever they want.

#2 - Forever 21 is hypocritical in many ways. They own U.S. sweatshops, so if you buy something from F21 that says "Made in USA" then it was made in a United States sweatshop. For more info, see "Made in L.A.," a documentary about this issue.

does it matter that much anyway? the threadless tee is sold out in most sizes already, so it's not like she's losing any sales.

anyone who buys forever 21's version is a sucker anyway. the yellow is a horrid color, and the faded graphic looks like crap.

#15 - really? REALLY? of course it matters. in all likelihood, schonlau is not receiving any royalties from f21, who probably did not ask permission to use her artwork gratis. so yes, actually, she IS losing sales - f21 is banking on her design to sell a t-shirt, the profits of which only benefit THEM.

granted, i don't know if, in fact, f21 DID license the artwork - but if not, schonlau should sue sue sue.

Hey Britaboutaleb!

I am a German journalist and we have just been reporting on this case in a radio piece. Obviously, we want to show the drastic similarity between Julia's and Forever21's design. In short, we want to put your pic on our webpage. In order to do so, we would need your OK.

Tell us quickly what you think!
Thank you very much:
